Any speculation? I wonder how long it will take for the new metropolitan to be named. It was no surprise that Met. Basil was dying so I would think that some thought has already gone into the decision.

Admittedly, I know nothing about the situation, but if the late Metropolitan’s demise was anticipated, one would think that a coadjutor with right of succession would have been named. Perhaps I’m mistaken, but in the case of the Ruthenians there’s really no Synod as such to even recommend a successor, and that alone would seem to indicate the need for some advance planning in such circumstances.

I’m scared to death it may be one of the other 3 bishops. I doubt any of those will do anything with the RDL.

I’d say the most likely candidate is HG William… Relatively young, moderately vostochnik, and already been moved once… not a hardliner to either side of the RDL debate…

If the synod gets to suggest three candidates one might suppose their names would be Gerald, John and William.
It would be interesting to see the Pope name someone from Europe, or even combine the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh offices once again.
These can be exciting times.

That’s what I thought when I saw the name Jack but it appears that Rome likes moving our bishops around. That is moving an existing bishop into an open position and then taking someone from the eparchy that was open and making them the new bishop of where the bishop was taken from.
Happened the last two times, moved Bishop Basil from Parma to Pittsburgh and moved Father John to Parma to be bishop and last time moved Bishop William from Van Nuys (now Holy Protection of Mary Byzantine Catholic Eparchy in Phoenix) to Passiac and moved Father Gerald to be bishop of Van Nuys.
I think that speculation in this is not a good thing and a few of the posts seem down right disrespectful to our hierarchy.
I highly down that the new Metropolitan will do anything about the RDL, for one think it was the council of hierarchs that moved it forward not just Metropolitan Basil and it would cost parishes much as they have already bought the RDL books now they will have to replace all of them.

Although some parishes don’t care. They simply have continued to use the old books. At the very least because the parishioners were appalled by the absence of Old Church Slavonic translations!
What we all can pray for is that we get a Metropolitan who will give the Ruthenian Church in America what it really needs - survival and growth in numbers. It’s not the job of just one man, but it would help!

From what little I know of the Ruthenians these days, it would seem to me that survival (and vibrancy) entails more “reclamation” of those who have been lost (some probably because of the RDL) than “growth” in the usual sense.

More recently yes I imagine a few, but mostly those previously loss through attrition to either geographic distance, Latin marriages, or to get their kids into Latin catholic schools. There is a bi-ritual school in/around Jessup, PS but it is the only one I know of.

Not so much your comments but the others denigrating our hierarchs going so far as to call them the three stooges went too far and were very offensive.
It is one thing to disagree with the councils of hierarchs on the RDL, it is another thing to be down right disrespectful.
One can disagree and still remain respectful.
