Good things happening here in the south…

Archbishop Gregory announced that the parish I go to in Kennesaw Georgia - St. Catherine of Siena - will be staring a mission Church in Emerson, Georgia. I’m very excited and could only think of the line “Whom shall I send” from the hymn “Here I am Lord.”

Archbishop Gregory also celebrated Mass today (March 8) and broke the ground for a new nave and sanctuary at another nearby Church - St. Micheal the Archangel in Woodstock, GA. They were also a mission of St. Catherine of Siena parish and their existing nave and sanctuary will become the parish hall. the new Church will seat 1100! The area circled in red will be completely new construction.

I thought you guys would like to see what the building will look like. Not exactly cruciform but nowhere near church-in-the-round. I have no preference, but I thought y’all would like to see.

Wonderful and joyous news. Inspiring for those of us keeping pews warm for the lost sheep. I think I will change my prayers from a church full of faithful to, so many that we need a bigger building.

May God bless the work and may it bear long lasting good fruit.

No classrooms?
They built our parish (in the same diocese) with no classrooms. What a nightmare.
The church looks great though!

Wonderful news!!! Pass on the Faith!!! 👍

God bless you all!!!

Happy happy happy dance

Excellent. Seeing well-thought-out churches go from planning stages to building is an absolutely magnificent experience. The South is rising, I tell you, in a whole new way!

Emerson, GA? I was under the impression that no site for the new mission has been selected. Can you elaborate?

Timothy,

My wife is from Woodstock and I’ve been to St. Michael’s several times and St. Catherine’s once on the first of this year.

I was so impressed with your parish–such reverence I’ve found at only a handful of the 100+ parishes I’ve attended in my life. We usually go to the Fraternity chapel in Mableton when we visit Georgia, but I hope we’ll visit St. Catherine’s again.

Father told us during the Archbishop’s annual appeal that it was going to be near the sports complex (wherever that is) near where Paulding, Cobb and Bartow counties meet. 🤷

Oh, they got classrooms. Their classrooms got classrooms. 😃

Seriously, the old part of the building has lots of classrooms.

Lucky duck! How wonderful! The blessings that come from a vibrant parish! Congrats!

Yes, but that doesn’t mean that a specific site has been announced, does it? Emerson is in Bartow County, in St. Francis of Assissi parish. I understood that the mission would be in or near Acworth, still in St. Catherine’s parish.

That’s what I was wondering too. Emerson is too close to St. Francis in Cartersville. But that is what Father said.

I recall overhearing a conversation about a site near I75 which spanned two counties and was partly within and partly outside of incorporated Acworth. It is difficult to find 20 contiguous acres.

So now I am wondering too if a site has been selected.

I spoke to Fr. Mark at his “going away” day at St. Joseph and he said they were close to finding a location. He said it would probably be “up and down the 41 corridor”. So that doesn’t really narrow down a specific location! I was really hoping for something to serve West Cobb. I unfortunately know too many Catholics around here who are attending closer protestant churches due to the drive. They cite the horrible traffic as the reason they’ve left. :tsktsk: I have had meetings at the church on weeknights where the 12 miles home has taken an hour and 15 minutes, so their complaints are not without reason.

We’ve been told that Mass will begin at a leased location in September, most likely.

Article on Fr. Mark in the Georgia Bulletin.

Apparently he has a background in construction engineering. Our facilities director spoke with him and said after the meeting, “Catholic Construction is in for a hard time with this guy. They aren’t going to get anything past him. We finally have a priest who knows how to read a drawing.”

I think he is looking for an apartment or home to rent now and then they will buy or lease a storefront or old Church.

We were told it was going to be near the sports complex. The sports complex is built by Bobby Cox and so it has lots of investment. Marriot Hotels is building there. Rumor has it that they are in talks to move the Little League World Series to the complex. The archdiocese planning director picked the location.

I never thought of traffic as a reason why people would leave the Church. That is a shame.

Fr. Mark owned his own engineering firm prior to becoming a priest. He is bright and full of energy.

I had heard the new church might be near the sports complex. I was excited to hear “Acworth”, but I think “Emerson” is more likely the address. Oh, well… it would have been nice to help and start a new parish.😉

When I first heard someone tell me that they no longer go to the Catholic church due to the drive, I thought it was completely crazy. I mean, that is where Jesus is! Then I heard it again and again. I feel like it’s evidence of the poor catechesis that many in my generation seem to have. They don’t even know WHY their decision is poor. The worst part is that they’re not raising their school-age children in the Church.

It’s not poor catechesis but non-existent catechesis.

I’ve noticed that many people down here people think that choosing a Church is nothing more than choosing a “worship style.”

I ran into a friend of mine - former Catholic - who was with a Junior Pastor from the Evangelical Church where he now goes. The pastor said, “Oh, the Catholic liturgy is beautiful. It is a great worship style.” I replied, “Jesus Christ instituted sacraments. Your church does not have them. I will never go to a Church without the sacraments. Catholicism is not a worship style.”

And that’s the thing about the way a mission Church happens that I found so interesting. The priest moves somewhere and starts saying Mass daily. It doesn’t matter if it is in a broom closet - he says Mass. He makes Christ present at that spot on earth, and claims that spot for Jesus through the real presence of Jesus. Then he makes Christ present through the rest of the sacraments. That location is forever changed, and the presence of Christ radiates out from it.

So that’s the first thing the Church does - establish the presence of Christ in the Mass and in the sacraments, and everything else naturally follows.

I want to be an altar server at the new mission. I’m going.

That is so beautifully put.

I would be SO happy if they established it in the West Cobb area!!! I admit I have attended other churches much closer at times. Just prayed for a Catholic Church to come in closer to us! Any news on location? I checked the website but nothing specific.

I was just at this complex this morning for a soccer game. It’s about 22 min from my area. (Mars Hill Rd area). Not sure on miles. But the traffic is non existent in that area, compared to driving over to Ben King. BUT the complex plans to add shopping, restaurants, and a hotel. It’s going to be a very busy complex.
