I am uncertain how such things as the New Mortal Sin List is determined and then finds it’s way to the Catechism. Can someone please explain this to me, or direct me to a detailed explaination.
Thanks,
Kirk

There is no new list of mortal sins, despite what you may have heard via mainstream news reports. As is common with religious matters, the press simply got the facts wrong, but ran with it anyways (often basing their stories on the misinformation in other press stories)

It was an attempt by the major media to pep up an otherwise dull news day.

The general definition of a mortal sin has three criteria to be considered such: a sin that is of grave matter, the sinner has full knowledge that it is a grave sin, and the sinner commits the sin anyway.

The “list” featured in the media was in reference to sins that the Church would consider mortal, and therefore necessary to be confessed. In my opinion, I think they publicly announced these sins as mortal not only because they are based on the three criteria above, but also to be forthright with Catholics so we are honest with ourselves and are “officially” held accountable for our actions.

I’d like to know when an article in the Vatican newspaper became equal to an Ecumenical Council or the Pope speaking ex carthedra since that’s what they’re making out to be

I don’t wanna sound like some Anglophobe but this seems to have first been reported by the British media which was also the case when the media misrepresented the the document which spoke negativly of Limbo as the “Pope abolishing Purgatory” and the infamous Byzantine Emperor things…🤷
