New movie: "Son of God"

Sounds like the author of this blog needs to move off to an island and start up their own church. It’s a movie. I don’t base my religion on Hollywood. I go to Mass, I read the Bible, I pray, I practice Catholicism or at least I strive to. So the movie has errors and is not scripturally sound? So what and why would that surprise anyone? It’s Hollywood, they’re about making money not saving souls. I liked, “Passion of the Christ,” not because I thought it was divinely inspired. It was just another perspective as far as I’m concerned and that’s what I think of this one as well. TV evangelists preach errors all the time and they’re making oodles of money-so what’s the big deal? They may be steering people in the wrong direction but at least they’re awakening a desire for,“Holiness,” and if and when they find that wanting maybe they’ll come to Catholicism- at least that’s how it happened for me. On another note, I’m absolutely ok with Jesus being portrayed by a handsome celebrity, especially if it’s a 3 hour movie I need someone to watch that’s easy on the eyes.

👍 This movie is putting Jesus as the point of conversation on many talk shows, news programs, etc. The fact is people are talking about Jesus, and this is important! Even if a few more people come back to the Church, this is important.

Vague accusations, conspiracy theories, and a belief that Ray Comfort is the last sane man…

…could this be Jack Chick’s son? 😛

Either way, I’m not a movie guy, and the New Age allegations alone (not the bashing of other Evangelicals, or the subtle anti-Catholicism) need substantiation. But if a gay Marxist like Pasolini can make a faithful film about the life of Christ, why not a couple of somewhat liberal Catholics? 😉

This is important! There will be people who will try to pick apart various parts of this movie and say the this scene does not follow Catholic or Protestant theology to a tee. They are missing the point. The average movie goer out there (including most Christians) does not know the finer points of New Testament (Catholic or Protestant) theology, nor probably do they care. The important part is the overall Gospel message of Jesus Christ, as portrayed in his life, teachings, and his love for us as he undergoes his passion on the cross. This followed by the joy of his Resurrection and his appearance to his closest disciples and final ascension to the Father in Heaven. If this is filmed beautifully, then this will go along way to evangelizing some very large audiences! Lets get the people in the door first, then we can talk theology!
 
I stopped reading when she described the Catholic view of God as “heretical.”

I won’t see the movie because I thought the mini-series was awful: bad - no, terrible - acting, inaccuracies, an unnecessary emphasis on gore and murder. (Yes, I know that’s part of the Bible, but it doesn’t have to be sensationalized.).

But then I liked " American Hustle" so what do I know?

Seemed like a lot of gossip. However, I have never watched a " God " movie and never will. I don’t want my concept of God and my Catholic Faith to be filtered through the eyes of anyone except the Magisterium.

And Jesus with a British accent! Wow, would never work with me. And he seemed pretty whimpy to me and I don’t think Christ was whimpy at all.

This came down my FB wall two days ago…I did alot of research and the blogger of this site won’t even say who he/she is…

Anyway, alot of anti-catholic comments…too much for me…

The lies that people type are so unbelievable…and I noticed that posts that I read on the 26th, are reappearing as if they were posted on the 27…weird!!!

The Church doesn’t make a habit of issuing official condemnations or approvals for movies. But some bishops (like Archbishop Gomes and Cardinal Wuerl) have given their recommendations. That’s enough for me to give it a chance.

I’m sure I’ll have a few minor theological and/or aesthetic quibbles. But why let the perfect be the enemy of the good? 🤷
 
Ok I’m confused. Was The Bible series so different from the Bible that it actually changed the message? I’ve recently returned to church and just started reading the Gospel in many years. So I don’t want anything to confuse me. Should I not watch this series?
 
Actually, you can see they have a lot of Catholic endorsements:

In addition to Cardinal Wuerl (Washington D.C.) and Archbishop Gomez (Los Angeles), there are endorsments from Carl Anderson (Supreme Knight of the Knights of Columbus), Immaculée Ilibagiza (Catholic author and speaker), Tom Peterson (founder of CatholicsComeHome.org), Brandon Vogt (Content Director for Fr. Barron’s Word on Fire), and more.

That’s not exactly the group of people I’d expect to see endorsing something dangerous and explicitly heretical. Certainly we are entitled to form our own opinions. But I think that – given the list above – it’s worth giving the movie a shot. Or, at the very least, it’s worth refraining from disparaging the film before we have seen it for ourselves.
 
Here is my problem with the movie: the casting. Can they not make a good christian movie with ethnic correct actors? Roma Downey as the virgin Mary? Really? REALLY?!! My mom was asking me to see it with her, and I told I’d want to see the reviews first. All I had to do is look at the cast an say a bit No. When will we stop portraying Jesus, Mary and all the biblical figures as white? Its so dumb and insulting.

I saw it tonight. The British accents bugged me, the actors white veneered teeth bugged me, the blond -ish disciple bugged me and Jesus looked like a cross between Brad Pitt abd a rock star. I liked The Passion of the Christ better.

About Mary…they had another actress besides Roma Downey play Mary in the beginning of the movie and later, Downey who, IMO didn’t look at all like Mary #1.

Yes! I saw a picture of the guy portraying Jesus and first thing that came to mind was hippie surfer dude Jesus.
 
It looks like the bible series that was shown on TV so I have already seen it. But anything about Christianity and the bible shown in the movies now should be good. Not many in Hollywood will make religious movies. I think we need to support and those who want to go and don’t watch TV should be encouraged to go.
 
Came across a review of the film that is critical, but look at this excerpt:
There are some minor non-biblical flourishes, however, a couple of which will be of particular interest to Catholics–not a bad business decision on the part of the filmmakers given that at least 50% of all Christians belong to the Catholic Church. One scene involves Mary rushing to the side of the fallen Jesus as he carries his cross to Calvary (that’s the Fourth Station for all you Way of the Cross devotees). After being reassured by her son that what is transpiring is God’s will and necessary for the good of all, Mary bows her head in acceptance and then helps lift the cross back up so Jesus can continue on his way. It’s a nice touch to which fans of Mary will respond, “Well, of course she would do that.” More surprising, though, is the scene after Mary Magdalene leads Peter to the empty tomb. Failing to convince his fellow apostles that Jesus has indeed returned, Peter calls for bread and wine and offers them all communion. It’s only after they’ve partaken that Jesus appears amongst them. It’s almost as if the movie is saying that if you want to see Jesus in the flesh, then take this, all of you, and eat of it. It’s a pretty amazing Catholic moment to see onscreen, one made all the more astounding by the fact that it was put there by Protestants.

Roma Downey is a practicing catholic and she was interviewed on ewtn about the film.

The movie does very little deviation from the gospels which is wise.

The movie is meant at evangelizing the world.

I’m glad those here are seeing the movie. I plan on taking my family today.

Just because Roma Downey is a devout catholic does not make her a good candidate to play mary. She should know better as a catholic that she has no business playing the moher of Jesus. That is self serving.
