Last night I read something that said she’s New Agey.

Roma Downey is the Executive Producer of the film. During filming the actress set to play the older Mary didn’t show. The cast encouraged Roma to step in. She resisted because of her deep devotion to the Blessed Mother.

She played a loving Mary in the film.

We have Roma and her husband, as well as the Lord, to thank for this beautiful film.

That’s what the initial OP asked about. Who knows?

The movie isn’t new agey, and is placing the “Son of God” on the lips of people all over the nation. I’d say that is a beautiful thing, and if it is well-attended, will send a message to Hollywood.​

A side note, based on similar conversations I’m seeing, we Christians are funny. We beg for moral, Christian, positive films and then we get one and rip it apart without justification, proof, or even having seen it. We are a fickle bunch when we act like that. Approaching hypocritical.
 
We could either have more movies that attempt to lead us to Christ (directly or indirectly) or Hangover 5. Take your pick.
 
Sorry to be blunt, but how many other films about Jesus or the Bible do you have to choose from? Let’s not be too quick to stick our noses up and tear this to shreds. It’s getting people to talk about Christ in a post-Christian culture. Not a bad thing.
 
I just saw the movie and it was great! I highly recommend for everyone. I also watched the entire Bible mini-series and have it saved on my DVR. Very good also. But if you don’t want to sit through the 10 hour mini series, the movie would be my recommendation.

Really? I totally agree with you. Why are some people asking “permission”? Dare to think for yourself.

This is important! There will be people who will try to pick apart various parts of this movie and say the this scene does not follow Catholic or Protestant theology to a tee. They are missing the point. The average movie goer out there (including most Christians) does not know the finer points of New Testament (Catholic or Protestant) theology, nor probably do they care. The important part is the overall Gospel message of Jesus Christ, as portrayed in his life, teachings, and his love for us as he undergoes his passion on the cross. This followed by the joy of his Resurrection and his appearance to his closest disciples and final ascension to the Father in Heaven. If this is filmed beautifully, then this will go along way to evangelizing some very large audiences! Lets get the people in the door first, then we can talk theology!

This:thumbsup: I just saw the movie and I highly recommend it. It’s beautifully made and if it brings people closer to God, then what can be wrong with that. It moved me! God Bless.
 
I just got done seeing it, and I thought it was pretty good. You can definitely tell it was originally a made for T.V. Mini-series, but I don’t think it detracted from the way the story was told. There were several parts that I found very moving, and I teared up at the portrayal of our Lords passion. I also like the way the Eucharist was portrayed at it’s establishment at the last supper. There were some surprising omissions though. With Lent being so near, I was looking for the time Jesus was in the desert and was tempted, but it was omitted. In addition to that there was some extra-biblical storytelling going on for dramatic effect. I don’t think this film will persuade any one to convert but it may inspire some to dust off their Bibles and take a look inside for the first time in a while.
 
I took my family to see the movie this weekend, and overall I thought it was a good movie and worth seeing. As with any movie about the gospels there has to be some degree of artistic license used for it to not be just someone reading from the bible to us. But the artistic license taken was tolerable. And I liked the actor who played Jesus. Jesus was portrayed as being warm and friendly. And I liked how the movie put emphasis on Jesus’ divinity and His miracles.
 
My wife and I saw the movie as well. We both were very impressed with the movie, the acting and what was included as part of the gospel stories. Like someone said before the British accents put me off a little, but what accents should they have been? A US, Australian, English with an Irish brogue accent? So, I guess that comes down to me nit picking.

As far as the ethnicity of the characters is concerned it really did not bother me. The guy that played Jesus was Portuguese, did he have to be an Israeli for the movie to be legitimate? Not for me, though maybe some would have preferred to see an actor from the middle east. I don’t know if that would have even been possible. I am sure there are all kinds of different considerations when choosing a particular actor. I did find one comment someone made that was opposite from my perception. There was a comment about the actors teeth gleaming and I had the exact opposite view. I remember specifically Matthew the tax collector having crooked teeth as well as a few extras in the movie. Which naturally struck me as legitimate, unless it was simply by accident.:). Overall it was a great movie to see right before the start of Lent.

👍 Best post of the thread. I wonder what a film about Jesus would look like if all of the naysayers here made their own version?
 
I watched Son of God Saturday afternoon and it was good. I think they did a good job. A few shots especially stood out. I think the actors portrayed the following scenes well and moving:

• The calling of Matthew combined with the Scripture of the different prayers between the Pharisee and the tax collector
• The vision of His suffering during the last Supper
• Jesus’ embrace with Peter at the Last Supper when Peter said he would lay down his life for Jesus
• The prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane by Jesus in contrast with the high priest’s prayer in the temple at the same time.
• Jesus’ loving touch on Judas when Judas gave him the kiss of betrayal
• Simon of Cyrene called Jesus “my Lord” while helping Jesus carrying the Cross
• Jesus put his hand over Simon of Cyrene to show his gratitude after arriving the site of Crucifixion

As for the accusing of Roma Downey as a New Ager, I don’t know how true it is; however, it doesn’t really matter. As long as the movie serves the purpose of evangelization and people experience the love of the Lord. And I think Son of God just did that.

What the evil one likes the most is to prevent people to watch anything about the Gospel or Jesus. There may be things we personally don’t like about the movie or about the producer, but be careful not allow ourselves become an instrument of show stopper. If we only watch a movie produced by a Saint, we are not going to have anything to watch. The producers of this movie are sinners just like you and me. Keep in mind the Church is a sinners’ Church who strives for holiness. Whether Roma has touched any New Age stuff or not is not going to take away any of her earnest intention for spreading the love of Jesus.

Since you’ve seen both, I’ll ask you (but anyone else can feel free to chime in).

How does this film relate to the Bible minisereis? Is it just an abridged version? Or is it entirely different footage? Or is it some new and some old footage? Are all the actors and actresses the same between the two?

I’m just curious. :o

Heaven is for Real, the movie version of v the book by Todd Burpo is due to come out sometime this spring out summer.
 
I have been seeing some articles lately that Roma Downey and Mark Burnett are very much into the NEW AGE movement. Can anyone verify this???
 
I watched the TV version and thought it was fine. Why the turning over of rocks? Think for yourself…watch the movie and the share your thoughts. I don’t get all this “mother may I watch a movie that a Protestant made?” “Will I go to hell in a handbasket if i watch it?” Really? 🤷
 
I don’t know about others but for me I have recently returned to church, I’m still reading through Luke’s Gospel, and then I have to read the Acts and then the Old Testament. I don’t want to watch something that did not happen in the Bible. It will confuse me since I only started reading it 3 weeks ago. There are ton of things I’ve forgotten since my first Communion. I don’t believe I’d go to hell if I watched a non Catholic movie about Christ. I just don’t want to mix things up.

So thats why I’m asking other Catholics if this movie follows our church teachings. If not, could you point me at another movie? I’v already seen The Passion of the Christ. :confused:
