Does anyone know if it is possible to take a new name after Confirmation? I couldn’t think of one before I was confirmed, because I felt that any name I took pigeon-holed me into a certain category. About two hours after Confirmation, I realized I should’ve taken either the name Mary or even Jude.

Anyway, can anyone answer this question for me or tell me where I can find the answer?

Thanks.

check with your pastor, but i believe the time has passed… 😦

The whole purpose of taking the Saint’s name is so that you have someone who you feel that you can connect with and pray to. You can pray to any Saint you want for help and guidance. I dont believe that the church keeps any record or whatnot on the name you choose. Anyways, if you feel yourself pulled towards a certain Saint, then you should pray to him/her.

Actually, whatever you choose as your confirmation name becomes part of the sacramental register, though no one ever asks for that information (sacramental registers are permanent records and cannot be changed). Back in the day, when I was confirmed, my “name” was chosen for me. Later in life, I adopted Teresa of Avila as my patron saint, because I identified so much with her spiritual struggles
(and that she suffered from horrible headaches as I do)…so consider choosing whomever you identify with the most and “adopt” that one (or even both) as your patron(s), as the previous poster advised.

Take good care…peace.

Your correct! I was a former parish secretary and taught Confimation for 25 years and sometimes was asked to record the Confirmadi’s names in the register. BTW Teresa is one of my favorites. Annunciata:)

I have several saints that are important to me, including the name of my confirmation saint. They are all willing to listen to us so ask both Mary and Jude to pray for you and make them a special part of your prayer life.

When I went through Confirmation (at the age of 28), they never discussed picking a confirmation name and I never chose one. I now live in a different state. Does anyone know if there are any issues with choosing one since I never did before?

I teach adult confirmation at my parish. I’m an old-timer (pre Vatican II) and was confirmed in the seventh grade. The nuns always a point of choosing a relevant patron saint.
Even though the practice has been de-emphasized, I tell my students to study the saints and choose one who has had similar life experiences as the student. I feel it gives them some grounding, and familiarity of shared experiences will help them feel more comfortable praying for their saint’s intercession.
I wish the practice would be re-emphacized.

My dh & I do RCIA. This past year, we had 2 candidates, both men. We strongly encouraged them to choose Confirmation names, and they both did. At their Confirmation, their sponsors introduced them to the priest by the Confirmation name.

Peace,
Linda
