I was wondering if anyone of you had any suggestions for a Catholic multimedia publication that I am trying to work on and modify. I have had this website for a few years but I haven’t been working on it for some time now.

Here is the main mission statement of the website. http://walkinginthedesert.com/walking-in-the-desert/

In a nutshell it is meant to promote both the “hermeneutic of continuity” and the “Re-Christianization of Society” by promoting Truth, Beauty, and Goodness, and the Restoration of all things in Christ.

The website will feature, articles of various genres of interest, podcasts and videos, all with the aim of presenting Catholic teaching, the exercise of virtue, and tradition.

My main question is should I change the name? I feel it might currently be too long and a bit ambiguous for most readers Catholic and non-Catholic. My friend and I also don’t know if we should not include the word Catholic. We wanted something simple yet that stands out. Something to do with press or media? Any other suggestions?

Technically speaking, the use of the word Catholic in any public way is subject to your bishop’s approval. In reality, many probably proceed with whatever plans they have to use the word in their name until the bishop says otherwise. Then, you either comply, as good Catholics ought, or you don’t - which begs the question of your claim to be Catholic.

Anno Domini? Or is that already in use?

I’m not sure. I will definitely take it into consideration. Thank you for the suggestion. “Anno Domini Press?”

Maybe Vox Clamantis? Latin for “voice crying out”… full phrase is vox clamantis in deserto meaning “the voice of one crying out in the desert.” Congratulations on your website!!

Problem with esoteric website names is they are not easily remembered.

People can remember “walking in the desert” but to remember “It was something like Fox and Clams something?” not so much.

What do you guys think about the following names? I think we narrowed it down to these ones or something similar.

“The Loyal Papist”
“The Roman Pulpit”
“Papist Press”
“Loyal Papist Press”

The domain name can be shortened and have the title a little longer.

Because one must have the permission of the local Ordinary to name your shop/blog/website/ministry/publication “Catholic”. A loyal Papist would need to go through the hoops and abide by any restrictions placed by the Ordinary 🙂

Back to the names, I do not like names that infer “No True Scotsman” thinking.

A loyal Papist might consider hoop hopping worthwhile! 😉

PS: Has the dachshund taken over the world yet? 😀

I was thinking using the name Papist as a sort of way of making fun of the historical usage of the term 🙂 Like there is the website Fish Eaters that basically does the same thing. It’s more of a sattirical use of the name. There is also the blog “Shameless Popery” which is basically doing the same thing.

That did cross my mind. If the content of your publication reflects your intentions, then that ought to be fine. The risk, I suppose, is that any title containing the word ‘Papist’ might turn Catholics away, without even bothering to read what you have to say. But…this is your area of expertise (most certainly not mine!), so trust your judgement; and may your publication be a success.

I do like “claiming” the words that are used as slurs. Thinking of making a shirt that says

Novo Ordine Missae duxit in domum suam a me

My cat has asked for a food-bowl, bearing the legend:

‘Dachshund duxit in domum suam a me!’

PS: Nah…only kidding!
