Hi there,
I am planning on going to New Orleans in a few months time. I am trying to find an early (7:30 or 8 am) mass so I can get to the conference I will be attending in time for the Keynote speaker. I found a church nearby the Convention Center that has such an early mass that I would have time. However, I am concerned about this church as they seem to be a shrine to St. Jude despite the name of the church being Our Lady of Guadalupe. This church is a member of the Archdiocese of NOLA so that slightly eases my mind. Has anyone been to this church who thinks I should go or not go.

Interesingtly there is a chuch in chicago with the same name and same shrine. The only thing i didnt like about the Chicago church was electric votive candles in the shrine. I assume the church’s name was changed due to ethnic change. As long as its listed as a diocease church it should be good. Wouldn’t hurt to read a bullutin or two though.

Why would this concern you?
despite the name of the church being Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Again, not sure what the problem is?
This church is a member of the Archdiocese of NOLA
Which is all you need to know, right?
so that slightly eases my mind.
Why only slightly?
Has anyone been to this church who thinks I should go or not go.
Maybe you can articulate to us why you wouldn’t go, instead of having us guess?

By all means, go to St. Jude’s! There’s a beautiful shrine in the church dedicated
to St. Jude and they have 4 Solemn novenas to him there every year.
Why are you worried about going there?

There are two or three other churches near the Convention Center as well:
St. Louis Cathedral, St. Patrick’s on Camp St., and the Church of the Immaculate
Conception (Jesuits’) on Baronne. You’d have to check their Mass times.

When I went down there, I just went to the Cathedral. But that’s in the French Quarter and I have no idea where the convention center is. It seems to me they had a lot of masses though.

I have a condo on Julia St.-walkable to the convention center. A little way down Julia, turning right on Camp St., there is Old St. Patrick’s Church. This is the oldest church in downtown New Orleans and is very traditional and beautiful. There are vigil masses at 4:00 and 5:30 on Saturdays and an early 8:00 Mass on Sunday. There is a traditional Latin Mass around 11:00, which I know is too late for you. Even if these are bad times for you, it is really worth the trip to see this beautiful church if you have a spare exploring minute. I also highly recommend St. Louis Cathedral in Jackson Square. Although not too walkable from the Convention Center, you can take the street car and walk from there. I’m unfamiliar with the church you mentioned. I’ll have to look it up and do some exploring myself!!

I just looked up your church and it is pretty far from you- both Old St. Patrick’s and St. Louis Cathedral are closer. Our Lady of Guadalupe is way down on Rampart, close to Louis Armstrong Park and the Saenger Theater- at least that’s how it looks on Google maps. I worry that you will be sliding pretty close to some sketchy areas- something you definitely have to avoid in New Orleans. My daughter and her family live in New Orleans and my husband and I will be back there in a few weeks. I’ll drive by and let you know what we find. I’ll also ask my daughter what she thinks. I hope you have a wonderful visit in New Orleans.

I just read the history of this church on their website and nothing seemed abnormal to me. I do not see a need for any concern.

I would go to a shrine to St. Jude for Mass any day. Sounds awesome.

Your best bet would be St. Patrick Church.🙂

I know that St. Patrick’s is right there near the C.C. but I prefer a church not as hard-core singing a lot of Latin but more like the 1970s through 1990s with Haugen, Haas, etc. (I actually seen some of the music handouts for S.P. and it is not exactly my cup of tea). Also, I want to not try to miss the Keynote as it will set the tone for the 2nd day of the conference.

When I was in NO for a family wedding I went there twice once for a weekday Mass and then for early morning Sunday Mass. It was just fine. I went to the Cathedral on Saturday morning. They were not that far apart. Our hotel was in between. It was so good to be able to get to Mass while on vacation with non church going family. I could just walk over there early in the morning without interfering with wedding activities.

That is for the Latin Mass 9:30 am .

As a native New Orleanian I can tell you to rest assured that you have made a good decision to attend Mass at Our Lady of Guadalupe. The church is minutes away from the convention center. God Bless, enjoy your stay in the Big Easy.

I went on a trip to NOLA back in March and I went to that very church. The music was more, shall we say, lively than what I was used, but there was nothing really wrong with the mass.

New A’wlins is my home…avail yourself of visiting St. Jude on Rampart…they have very early weekday and weekend Masses scheduled…back in the day…they called the really early weekday Mass, used to be like 4:30am 'the fishermans Mass"…very Catholic City…Catholic Churches abound…try to visit St. Mary’s Assumption in the Irish Channel…not difficult to find…enjoy yr visit…Immaculate Conception on
Barrone is our Parish…Pax

I just came back home from a week trip to New Orleans, and I would like to second those who recommend St. Patrick’s Church. I attended a late Sunday Mass at St. Patrick’s and it was wonderful. Beautiful interior, great music and a homily that challenged those in the pews to be faithful to the Magisterium. 👍

I actually had to go to St. Pat’s as I slept through my 1st alarm, however, I was impressed with the church and how the Mass despite being said with the priest facing backwards but in English was done in 30 minutes flat (I checked my phone after and it said 8:30) which gave me enough time to return to my hotel for a quick bite before going to the conference.

The priest is actually facing forward, toward God and offering the prayers on your behalf. 🙂

St. Pat’s is one of my top two or three favorite churches I’ve been to when traveling. Can’t wait to go back to New Orleans in a couple months.
