On August 9th, the OC feast of St Panteleimon the Healer, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church glorified a local Saint, the Venerable Eutropia Isayenkiv of Kherson in Crimea.

orthodox.org.ua/uk/node/9774

She would be the equivalent of a “Blessed” in the Roman Catholic Church as her liturgical cultus is for Crimea. Other Churches are free, of course, to include her in their calendars and she could be canonized/glorified again for wider church veneration.

There are pictures of the glorification ceremony with the “Ark” containing her relics with her icon.

Among other Orthodox saints in Ukraine who will be similarly honoured in the coming future is an ethnic Georgian, Schema-Archbishop Anthony who died as a schema-monk (the highest grade of monastic tonsure in the East) and is entombed at the entrance of the Near Caves of the Kyivan Caves Lavra. There are more than 200 Venerable monastics entombed in those underground caverns with the myrrh-streaming Heads of 61 unknown Saints (except for one positively identified as that of St Clement pope of Rome). There are also numerous other Saints who were tonsured at the Lavra but who died elsewhere, iincluding St Seraphim of Sarov, tonsured at the Lavra and told by St Dosithea of the Lavra to go to Sarov . . .

Don’t see any reason why the EC Churches couldn’t canonize their own local Saints in this same way.

She was very old lady who was monk until monastery in Tavria closed. Then lived in Kherson and had many spiritual children. In death she had many miracles for them at her grave. She has 105 years at her death.

Dear Volodymyr!

Forgive me that I have not yet learned to write in Cyrillic on the computer!

The question you raise is about the nature of a Catholic “Blessed” or “Beatus.” A “Blessed” is a saint (“chastynna kanonizatsia”) whose liturgical cult is limited to a prescribed area. Canonization would extend that cult to the entire Church.

So the Ukrainian Catholic new martyrs such as Blazhenny Kliment Sheptytski and others are liturgically venerated in the same way as saints are, except their veneration is limited to the UGCC.

The same is true of Blessed John Paul II. His public veneration is limited to Poland and Rome, but it is possible to make application to Rome to get permission to have a chapel in Canada dedicated to Blessed John Paul II (which has happened in Brampton, Ontario).

In the Orthodox Church, the Holy Optina Monastery venerates the Optina Fathers canonized for wide veneration. At the same time, the Monastery itself has canonized about 12 New Martyrs for veneration by the Monastery alone.

The Saints of the Kyivan-Pecherska Lavra were, at one time, glorified/canonized for veneration by that Monastery alone. St Peter Mohyla canonized them for the entire Kyivan Church and later they became all-Orthodox saints (and are in the Roman canon of Saints as well).

St John Maxymovych of Shanghai and San Francisco, similarly, was canonized a saint for California (and icons were made of him then). He was later, as you know, canonized by ROCOR and when ROCOR reconciled with the Moscow Patriarchate, St John Shanghaisky became a universal Orthodox Saint (and is widely honoured by Catholics and Anglicans - a group of Anglicans wanted to rename their parish in his name!).

“Venerable” or “Prepodobny” in the Latin Church signifies that the person was good and worthy to be honoured for their virtuous and holy life (including private veneration by individuals).

In Orthodoxy, “Blessed” can mean a category of saint, but also a good person like the “Venerable” of Catholicism.

Slava Isusu Khrystu!

SAINTS, VENERABLS, BLESSEDS

Олександру. дякую! This is good explanation. I have trouble knowing which is what - our names for saints (sorry, I am Russian speaking Ukrainian) are not so much by how “holy” or “good” but on what they did. Like святители were bishops, преподобные were monks, and so on… My question not polemical just curiosity based. Roman system seems more complicated, with levels of saints. I like your explanation.

Duzhe proshu! It is always a pleasure to converse with you, Pane Volodymyre!

The next saints to be glorified will be the Holy Schema-Archbishop Anthony of the Kyivan Caves Lavra, the holy New Hieromartyr Sergiy Bondarenko and the Holy New Martyr Ivan Nalyvayko of Zaporizhe - am looking forward to seeing their canonization icons!

Cheers,

Oles
