The church where I attend morning Mass has a new pastor. Some observations: he does not wash his hands at the appropriate time before the Consecration (the assoc. pastor no longer does, either). He doesn’t say, “Let us call to mind our sins …” but says something like, “Because God forgives us we can say, Lord have Mercy, Christ have mercy, Lord have mercy.” No time for silent reflection. He doesn’t bow in front of the altar at the start of Mass, but comes in from the side and bows to the crucifix from behind the altar. (I’m no liturgy expert, so I don’t know the norms here) The thing is, this guy gives really good homilies. Challenging and on the mark. I just find it curious and will be interested to see how things pan out. —KCT

Perhaps you could introduce yourself to him, mention that you notice he does things “differently” and ask him to help you understand why

Also you could read the GIRM and see if any of the things he is doing are contrary to what it teaches. It is available on line.

Yes, the main celebrant should symbolically wash his hands after the offerings are placed on the altar.

He must read the exact words printed in the apporved liturgical books.

He must reverence the altar not teh crucifix at the beginning of Mass.
