I used to belong to a liberal Protestant congregation that was mostly run by actively practicing homosexuals, so I am fully aware of their side of the issue, and what they think the Bible is telling them.

I was asking you what you think it means, though, instead of simply assuming that you go by the same interpretation that they do.
Depends on the verse and in what context. But in reference to Sodom for instance, the story could be about hospitality and rape. In Romans it could be about heterosexuals engaging in unnatural homosexual practices. Leviticus could be about gay prostitution?? I wasn’t there. 🤷

Again mainly though I believe the references to homosexuality could be something on the order of the many other things in the Bible you don’t take literally though. I am not a strict literalist. Paul in 1Cor in the Douay Rheims uses effeminate. I don’t believe for a nanosecond someone with effeminate characteristics is going to be barred from heaven for that reason. So again, Paul’s customs? 🤷

Call it what you want but the words are there.

Because another poster had asked me if I thought “so called Catholics” as she put it were forming their own religion. Since they follow their conascience those were the words from the CCC I quoted. 🤷

Yes maybe you should start your own church in a pre-Vat 2 form.
You’re still quoting the Catechism out of context. That is plainly obvious.

Telling me to start my own church is asinine. There is but one Church and but one teaching on homosexuality, that it is condemned.

By the way…for someone who is so against casting stones…you seem to lob quite a few at the Catholic Church and people in the church…Then back away with your hands up innocently…“I haven’t done anything like that”…
In discussing beliefs I dissent from I simply discuss those beliefs. I am far from perfect. And I’m sorry but when you can find somewhere where I have told someone they face hell or could not be saved, or are not a Catholic when their own Church defines someone as, or saying something someone said was “assinine” then we can talk about me casting stones. God bless you and everyone here and and peace be with you and all always.

To my brothers and sisters in Christ -

Forget opinions. Everyone wants the truth. Opinions are not helpful. Find out what the Church teaches and the reasoning behind what she teaches. That’s it. That’s all you have to do.

The media is trying to teach us that there is nothing wrong with homosexual acts. The media is not your friend - not on this issue.

Find out what the Catholic Church has to say and you’re done.

God bless,
Ed

‘A man whose heart is perverted would not know how to remain long among those who place their happiness in virtue.’

St. Ignatius of Loyola

It’s also an idiotic response. A simple poll and sure enough leave it to a Roman Catholic to find some way to state they are the true church and nobody else is. 2.4 billion Christians in the world, 900 million Roman Catholics and this narrow minded individual puts stock into 100 responses as fortifying their opinion.

No disrespect but homosexual acts are a sin period end of story. Paul explains this in Romans and still to this day we don’t get it:shrug:
In re-reading the post, I think I missed Doki’s reference above. I agree that it is unfair to state that “the majority of non-Catholics have compromised their morals”. Given the number of nominal Catholics that disobey the Teachings of the church, it seems quite hypocritical to make such an assertion.

Amen! If Catholics just assented to Church teaching in humility and faith, arguments like this, and social discord like we have in society, would not happen.

Good gosh!
why can’t you say, as a Catholic, that you believe homosexual behavior is sinful, and If you do not believe it to be sinful, say so. What’s to discuss? God is our judge.
Peace Carlan.

Of course, those who hold this view wouldn’t call it fornication. . . .

I voted that I do think such behavior is sinful, but I should clarify: I am speaking materially and not formally (in other words, with the Catholic Church I recognize that subjective guilt is not the same as objective sinfulness) and I am not sure that (to use Catholic terminology) I would regard such a relationship as mortally sinful even if engaged in with full knowledge and consent. In other words, I do not favor denying gay couples communion, although I do think that the Church should avoid taking any action that implies that same-sex relationships are fully legitimate and/or equivalent to marriage.

Edwin
Edwin, with respect, I cannot make any sense out of this position. To offer communion to those who are in mortal sin IS taking action that implies that such behavior is legitimate.

Neither was I. The Church was, though - and the Church is telling us that homosexual actions are sinful. (Merely being a homosexual is not a sin, according to the Church.)

So is making a mockery of the opposite sex. I don’t think when St. Paul was condemning effeminacy, he was referring to thin men with fair skin and blonde hair - but rather, to the practice of mocking women through exaggerated imitation. (Monty Python didn’t actually invent that sort of humour, although I suppose a lot of people think it’s “modern.”)

No…I can talk about you casting stones without that. I’m pretty sure you don’t get to decide. You talk about people being “tolerant” but then point at people you disagree with…i.e…people in your church…the bishop…you appear to be less then charitable with them. Why?..because they stand up for the Catholic faith. You also seem to expect a standard out of them that you don’t out of others. Most of the people that I have seen have not said you weren’t Catholic…they added a description onto it…which you don’t like. And they have said your views are not Catholic which is why people have asked if you really are Catholic. Which I guess would leave most people to ask why you want to belong to a Church that you disagree with so much? 🤷 I really haven’t heard you say anything good about the Catholic church at all. I think the above says it all…their own church…isn’t that your church too? We get the feeling that you want the Catholic church to change their teachings to match your view. That’s why we will defend it…from people who want to move away from Jesus’s teachings to their own point of view. Again I ask…why you do want to belong to a Church that you disagree with so much? or are you like a quarrelsome spouse who enjoys putting down their mate all the time?

The lack of logic in what happened at the University of Illinois is hard to believe.
Did anyone start a thread in one of the News forums about this story?
Yes…they did. It got me thinking to this thread…where people don’t even want you to say that you think homesexual acts are sinful. Really isn’t that what happened there? The professor gets a question about what the Catholic church teaches. He tells them what it teaches. But he is not grading on what they believe or don’t believe. But then he is fired. Really who should be teaching a class on Catholism? an aethist? or maybe someone who doesn’t agree with their teachings… Hmm…CMatt25–maybe this is a job opportunity for you…😃

Not to nitpick either but women should keep quiet in churches then too. And the universe from start to finish with man and woman created, was completed in 144 hrs with an evening and a morning being a day. I know tons of Catholics who don’t take either of those literally. A woman should be forced to marry her rapist too after the rapist pays her father 50 sides of silver. We shouldn’t have abolished slavery in the states. Keep stoning ppl. And so on…
CM, it seems like you believe that the Church should “keep up with the times”.
I’m having a tough time finding any of those in the catechism. Can you help me out?
Sure can! 👍 First of all place the discernment of Scripture a bit above of the catechism and you’ll find those in Scripture along with a bunch of other things we don’t believe today. 🙂
This is an interesting response. You do not accept the successors of the Apostles to be able to discern which Scriptures apply to us, or not, but prefer your own opinion over those that were appointed by Christ.

It is not a matter of “don’t believe” CM. Of course we believe everything that is written. Just because it is written for our instruction does not mean that it is written about us. The Magesterium decides what applies to us, and what does not.
Are you equating homosexual acts to other things biblical beliefs that “Catholics don’t take literally”?

The Church is pretty clear on its stance on homosexual acts.
I have noticed that CM does not have much use for the authority of the Church in these matters.
🤷 I’m open to the possibilty while discerning on my lifelong journey. I try not to judge. But I know what the Church says. Peace.
If you are “open to the possibility” that homosexual acts are acceptable, then it means that you have rejected the Teaching Authority in the Church appointed by Christ.
“Judging” is one thing, and telling a brother they are in error is another.

I’m sure I wouldn’t be the first person to point out that you appear to ignore Catholic doctrine when convenient, especially regarding homesexuality and abortion issues.

I’ll be praying for you Matt.
yes, I noticed this too. I always have found it curious that he wants to call himself "catholic’ while rejecting Catholic faith. He is in my prayers too.
So you’re saying homosexuals fought their orientation and married the opposite sex regardless? That seems sad to me though for them to have to live a lie like that today when for instance women are not dependent on men to support them.
you find it “sad” that someone would fight something in themselves that is gravely disordered?

Do you find it 'sad" if a person who is sexually attracted to pre-pubescent children “fights their orientation”?

I’ve been reading this thread and you sure don’t sound very catholic to me!
Do you or have you read the bible?
Have you read Romans 1:26-27 ? If so does that tell you anything?
Your views sound very liberal on this subject for sure…
You truly need to explain yourself as a catholic or remove catholic from your I.D.!

That’s right! 👍 1Timothy 3:15 ! states where the the truth is…

Matthew

That’s right! 👍

You can believe and think and continue to post whatever you want Anna but this is my last post to you about this.

But no Anna not because anyone stands up or because I want anything to change to my way. I am human. I never claim I am infallible.

But because for one reason Christ taught us, the flock, to know true shepherds by their fruits. And you might have no problem with it. And you might believe true Apostolic successors, who proclaim the sanctity of life and preach infallible faith and morals do not know better and can not help or keep themselves from covering up something like child abuse. And that’s fine. I do not. I believe one finds good shepherds among all flocks. You attend an Episcopal church or did the last I saw. I have met some fine Episcopalian priests who spread the message of Christ’s love greatly. I have also met pastors of various denominations who do so. And yes I have known a Catholic priest a time or two (figure of speech!) 🙂 in my life who have done so as well.

And “their own Church” was in reference to those or “they” who proclaim me to dissent but who also dissent from Church teaching on who is a Catholic. I was speaking to those individuals and “their” is the possessive form of “they” whether you have seen most of them or not.

You obviously have not read every post I have made then on CAF.

If it is such a concern of yours, you will have to ask God when you see Him why He led my parents to have me become a Catholic and why the Church defines Catholic as She does.

I have indeed met some folks here who do a much better job than I in spreading Christ’s message of love with open arms. But by in large unfortunately my experience at CAF has done more to drive me further away. YMMV. 🤷

And I can not help it if my conscience, even after informing it, still does not act in accordance with every Catholic teaching. The only way in which I could get it to do so would be to indoctrinate it to another human beings thinking on everything. I believe God gave me a brain not to do that with it, but to think and reason with.

The difference for me is many people on CAF @ least do not seem to grasp the difference between truth and knowledge and faith and belief. You BELIEVE you know the truth and understand Jesus’s point of view. That’s a far cry however from knowing you have the truth. And that is not relativism when one believes in an ultimate truth. Again I do not proclaim I have all the answers. You can believe as you want and it doesn’t make you wrong or me right nor visa versa. It is faith and belief and interpretation. I simply believe we will know the all ultimate truth when He comes for us again.

In the meantime I sincerely pray and again hope God blesses you and all here on your lifelong journeys of faith. Peace be with each of you always.

One way you can tell that a sex between two men is sinful or at least, not meant to be, is in the fact that men’s anuses don’t become naturally lubricated, and therefore, any sex without petroleum jelly will be a definite OUCH.

I do not. **** So…you seem to be saying that you think a Pope covered it up? Tell me I’m wrong in that…please. And of course you would have to define which instances…for example some of them were with 17 year olds…in homosexual encounters…but consentual…which is different then a 8 year old…no? And what time frame was it? Because there was a time when everyone thought that people like that could be rehabilitated…now we know a little more about it. But I do believe the Church does know best. I also know that there are sinners in the Church…any church.

Umm…no…never even set foot in an Episcopal church. Spent time in the Church of Christ, conservative Baptist, and Assembly of God. Sadly have not met many good shepards amongst those churches I attended. Did meet one exception associate pastor. But what does that have to do with anything? I’m Catholic now for a reason and I do believe my Protestant brethren are missing the fullness of Christ. I did not stay in a church I now longer agreed with…nor did I stay and complain about everything.

You obviously have not read every post I have made then on CAF.
** With all due respect…you have over 2,000 post…so no…I haven’t read every one…have looked through your post enough to see you are fine going against some major teachings of the Church. And to see that you sure do like to argue…hmmm…wonder what fruit there is there?**

If it is such a concern of yours, you will have to ask God when you see Him why He led my parents to have me become a Catholic and why the Church defines Catholic as She does. With all due respect…that is a cope out. You are old enough (I think) to decide for yourself. I think you like being a desenter.

I have indeed met some folks here who do a much better job than I in spreading Christ’s message of love with open arms. But by in large unfortunately my experience at CAF has done more to drive me further away. YMMV. 🤷 Maybe because you are on a Catholic forumn argue some very non-Catholic views…just going out on a limb here…

And I can not help it if my conscience, even after informing it, still does not act in accordance with every Catholic teaching. The only way in which I could get it to do so would be to indoctrinate it to another human beings thinking on everything. I believe God gave me a brain not to do that with it, but to think and reason with. Really? You don’t think other Catholics do? I got my Bachelors degree Summa Cum Laude…and yet I know that there are Church fathers that have far much more wisdom. But I have to be able to see my own infalible and that I may want things to be a certain way so that I can keep doing things without being convicted.
I simply believe we will know the all ultimate truth when He comes for us again. Uhhh well he did leave his commandments did he not? I BELIEVE the difference between you and I is that I’m willing to submit to the authority of the Church and the authority of the commandments…not argue semantics.

In the meantime I sincerely pray and again hope God blesses you and all here on your lifelong journeys of faith. Peace be with each of you always. As do I…I am also concerned for my fellow Catholics though…we are supposed to be building up the Body of Christ…not tearing it down but ignoring Church teachings. Which IMHO that is not only what you are doing but encouraging everyone else to do
