New possible obstacle for Catholic-Orthodox unity on the sight

I too find Protestants more welcoming and inclusive towards Catholics than Orthodoxians. Strange to say considering we have a shared history and many doctrinal similarities with the Orthodoxians.

Having said that it’s a defensive or protective mechanism on their part. From what… I don’t know. Perhaps it’s just the Orthodox parishes I have attended. Perhaps it’s me. 🤷
 
I know, that’s my term to describe them. Good for you, I suppose family would have to be friendly towards family.

My experience with them has been different and it hasn’t been only one experience. It has been several experiences, all when I lived in the city. I think it’s because I don’t speak their language or practice their culture. Their churches appear to be country/language/culture specific.

I have had positive experiences with the few Orthodox in my town who attend Mass with us because their nearest church is a 3 hour drive away.

This defensiveness might also have to do with many, many centuries of conflict and oppression by various Muslim empires, even to this day in some places; to 2 brutal world wars in the last century, dealing with treacherous enemies, and treacherous at times allies.
Then there were generations of domination by atheistic Communism. Most of the evils of the world was concentrated in their own back yard.

I believe one of the bishops who is promoting a controversial proposal is from Serbia, which in the past lifetime dealt with Nazi’s, Fascists, Communists, forced integration with their enemies in “Yugoslavia”, a long cold period under Tito, then the recent wars battling opponents near and far. That’s a lot of history.

Serbian Patriarch proposed it in the name of the Serbian Orthodox Church. We will see what will happen with this proposal, Belgrade Patriarchate is in very good relations with both Moscow and Constantinople Patriarchates.
 
I commented earlier this week that it seems to be open season on the Orthodox again. (Don’t ask me how often that season comes around, I’ve never kept track.) But having said that, calling them “Orthodoxians” isn’t as bad as some of the stuff I’ve read on recent threads.

Every Fall and winter I think. Last year around this time, Randy Carson started a lot of threads about the Orthodox that reached epic lengths but were very tense and acrimonious. I look forward to these threads though because you can always rely on the Orthodox to have a very detailed look at history. When a Catholic quotes a council or a Father, you don’t even have to guess that the Orthodox response will be “Out of context” and I’m waiting to hear a good counter response.

Thanks have read it. Not sure why it’s controversial. Their claims/actions have no bearing on the Catholic Church. I have little interest in whether we unify with Orthodoxy.

I bear no animosity towards them. I view them as a “true” Church and our closest brethren. I just don’t think about reunification with Orthodox.

Today I learned a bit about their historical subjugation by various governments and persecution during wars and even by our Church. Some date back decades. That new knowledge is a good thing to have so I can better understand and relate to my refugee Orthodox friends in my town as they don’t talk about their experiences in the Middle East.

Then I would welcome them with open arms as I welcome all who cross the Tiber. That would truly be a miracle. Praise God.

I don’t think about reunification 99.9% of the time until I come on here and read the threads.

Okay, but seriously, it really amazes me how much of the you-should-become-Catholic sentiment is directed specifically toward our Orthodox brethren. That is, I think, the heart of what we’re talking about.
