New Priest from the Philippines

Hello!

Our parish is in the midst of preist reassignment. We will be getting a parochial vicar or assocaite priest from the Philippeans in January. We were talking at a meeting about wanting to make him feel welcome becuase he is actually coming from the Phillipeans and is not a citizen of the US of Phillipino descent.

I am wondering if any CAF members have:
  1. Been to the Philippeans and can offer some “pearls” of Wisdom on culture
  2. Can suggest good resources for us to review
  3. ARE Priests from the Philippeans or know any who would eb agreeable to answer some email questions?
  4. Have any expereince with welcoming a preist from another coun try into your parish community

Just be nice to our Filipino Priest, bless to him by simply get his right hand to your forehead. And Of course if you can, prepare foods for him, such as fruits and delicacies or his favorite dishes . That is how we respect our priest here.
 
Our priest is English but has been world wide so initially anyway I tried to speak to him a little about how Japan does things like we alter our clocks in October and May so asked him what they do. We went to the cemetary for a spiritual guidence session and afterwards suddenly asked him what happend in Japan and yeh got bit of a shock:p. Just little things like that to help begin talking to a stranger and allow them to share their experiences ‘if they want to’. Try not to learn too much about that country because then you can ask him natural questions as per fit to whatever is going off. Far better to be sponteneuous because then you are not expecting and if he don’t fit what you been expecting then it be a let down for you. You may or mayn’t have to be patient with his accent. But leave the rest to an exciting journey of discovery of another from a different country. Don’t have pre conceived ideas. That is how priests meet us. They get to know us invidually by what ‘we say and do’ not what they are told about us by others. Listen and be welcoming friend.😃
 
I am Filipino and have lived most of my life in the Philippines. You can ask me specific questions if you like.

Filipinos in general are sociable, just having a lot of people being around him would make him happy. Be careful about expressing your opinions, not that you shouldn’t say them but how you say them. Remember the cultural difference, at the beginning he might take something differently than intended. Just go easy on him at the beginning.

Thank-you for your response. I think we have a great community for him to come into and like the example you gave above, am grateful for any hints, thoughts, suggestions.

It’s hard to decide what to do…if you research too much you could fall accidentally into stereotyping (which is what I DON’T want), but then again a little bit may be helpful.

Since most Filipinos come from large familes he would probably enjoy a homecooked meal with a large family in the parish.
 
I find Phillippino’s to be very friendly, inquisitive, and talkative. They are great conversationalists, willing to listen and honest about how they feel. I can’t recall ever meeting a Phillipino and not having a pleaseant conversation or becoming good friends very quickly.

I left many good friends back in New York City and some in Toronto too.

You can contact me or PM me. I grew up there…and I know some priests back there…in fact, three of my HS classmates became priests.

So you can ask me questions.

Did he come directly from there? Where was he assigned before?

Phil culture is socieable…friendly…he would most likely like home cooked meals…be around people alot…meet a lot of people…conservative in outlook.

Usually, they are addressed as Among (nickname)…Among (pronounce with a long A…as in Aaa…mong (nickname)…Among is the vernacular for Father.

You may surprise him with this gesture…the usual sign of respect there is to get the right hand…and touch your forehead with it gently.😃
