“The ladies of Cecilia”, a new pro-life, evangelization music group
to appear on EWTN’s “Life on the Rock” show.

As faithful Catholics, we are all called to take up the challenge of Pope John Paul II’s call for a “New Evangelization”, One new Catholic music group is taking that call quite seriously. “The ladies of Cecilia”, is a group of orthodox, Catholic, young women who want to use their musical talents and knowledge of the Faith to make a difference in peoples lives, especially the lives of young people.

With a wide variety of music styles ranging from Classical pop, American and Irish folk music, to instructional type songs dealing with everyday problems that young people face, this group of classically trained young women, wants to strengthen the faith of young people so that they will be able to recognize and challenge the false values of today’s world.

All the young women in this apostolate were home-schooled and are outstanding examples of the achievement potential of homeschooled students. A big part of their mission is to promote a positive, truly feminine, image of young women. In their performances, these young ladies will take the principles of the Catholic faith, as well as the ideals put forth by Pope John Paul II in his writings on the family, and “multiply”, so to speak, their effect through the medium of music: quality music performed by young women of character, modesty, and grace. Through their own good example, and the witness they give, they will promote the virtues of true womanhood and authentic Catholic family life to today’s young people.

“The ladies of Cecilia”, have been invited to appear on EWTN’s “Life on the Rock” show with Fr. Mark & Doug Berry later this month. The one hour show will include interviews with the girls about the goals of their ministry, as well as the group singing several songs. The date for the live show is October 28 (Thursday) at 10:00 pm, with encore presentations on Friday the 29th at 9:00 am and 8:00 pm, and Saturday the 30th at 1:00 am. All times are Eastern.

If they’re classically-trained, they might pen a few simple pieces of art music. I’d much rather hear a modern Ave Maria, Gloria Patri, or Ave verum corpus than whatever banal lyrics they’re likely to sing. Please don’t take my cynicism too heavily, but I hate rock music with a passion. The only way of real, authentic spiritual uplift comes by the orchestra and the organ. Perhaps they might use their classical training to serenade us properly, and dedicate their music to the Blessed Trinity, like Haydn did.

I’m not holding out hope. 😛 My time is long past, it seems! Do we always have to listen to some power chord-drenched nonsense about “love” and “peace”? I’ll love these women when they set a traditional Roman Catholic song to music! 😃

Dear Glorious Order

FYI, the group does not do rock or Christian rock music. I might add though that they are looking at some of the old rock & roll tunes from the 50’s & 60’s, ones which had nice melodies and using those melodies with new lyrics. One example - there is a song that was done back in the 60’s by an Australian group titled “I’ll never find another you”. This song lends itself nicely to a talk and discussion about fidelity and commitment in marriage. They have rewritten the song with additional lyrics, and the group is just waiting for all the copyright issues to be worked out, so they can record it.

I might add one other point. The songs you mentioned would be great if the girls are singing at a Tridentine Mass, but how many young people are interested in a concert of the type of music?

Thanks & God bless.
