New prophets

How does one counter some protestants argument that suggests that since Our Lord allowed prophets in the past why should he not now allow prophets today.
Some religious organisations have elders that claim to have the Lord speak to them personally.
eg. here in Australia a program - four corners - was aired concerning a particular “non denominational” group called the Christian fellowship, who’s elder and leader claims to have communications from Our Lord.
Any suggestions and answers most welcome.

Hebrews 1:1-2 says it all in black and white - 'In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe." (my emphasis)

Having Jesus’ revelation we need no other “prophet” to speak to us on God’s behalf, for how can anyone else improve on God Himself, become incarnate, speaking to us?

Jesus prophesized there would come false prophets and false messiahs.

You really can’t get any clearer than that.

That’s not really a reason for denying the existance of post-NT prophets alltogether, though.

But just to make clear: I do not believe that there have been any prophets in the biblical sense of that word since the first church.
And actually, it was an RC friend of mine who introduced me to the opposite viewpoint - that there are still prophets to this day - and used one Vassula Ryden as an example of a prophet…

She’s not accepted by the church as one who is in communication with Our Lord … therefore not considered to be a prophet!

Vassula Ryden would not be a good example as she is not officially recognised by the Church… quite contrary in fact.
And well, there are people to whom God has spoken, there have been numerous Saints in the history of Church - including St Faustina, Padre Pio, Ignatious Loyola etc. But their revelation do not add anything new to the revelation - as the full Truth has been revealed in the Bible. They are just messages for us for the given time.
There are also Charismatic groups with people who have gifts of prophesy, but that is also another story…

There are few statements in the Bible that tell us more strongly that God would send more prophets. If he did not plan on doing so why did Christ not simply say “there will be no more prophets”?

He tells us how to tell the real from the fake. pointless information if there is to be no more real prophets.

And He Himself (Lord Jesus) gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; Ephesians 4:11-13

This by no means says there will be no more prophets. Only that the teachings given by moses et al. (at times refereed to as the law and the prophets) where to be done away in favor of the new higher law.

So you dont understand the meaning of the words ‘Law’ and ‘Last’? Oh im sorry to hear that.
These are the words of Jesus, he clearly says no more prophets after John the Baptist.

John says that many prophets are falsely inspired 1 Jn 4:2

St Paul goes further by saying that ‘let anyone who teaches a gospel which is different to the one which we teach, let them be outcast’ Galations 1:9
