I have just finished reading a book titled NEW SAINTS AND BLESSEDS OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH 1979-1983. This is the first volume of a series of books devoted to all the new Blesseds and saints created by Pope John Paul II.

This English translation is published by IGNATIUS PRESS. So what can I say about it?

First off, of the 35 new Blesseds and the 5 new saints, I recognized the names of only 3. Blesseds Kateri Tekakwitha and Fra Angelico, and Saint Maximilian Kolbe. The remaining stories were an excellent introduction to these new names who may one day become well known.

Fun reading, and recommended. Tomorrow I will start the second volume, 1984-1987, during my coffee breaks at work.

Sounds like a very interesting book! Thanks for the info. I’d love to get it.

Were Blesseds Francisco and Jacinta Marto among those listed? They were two of the visionaries of Fatima. I thought I had heard they were beatified by John Paul II. But I can’t remember, exactly (if it was John Paul II… or Paul the VI, who beatified them).

Also wondering about St. Gianna Molla. Is she also listed? She died in the early 1960’s… and was also canonized by John Paul II. Very inspirational saint, for our times.

Nope. Probably in a subsequent volume
