*U.S. Social Security (search) cards won’t be worth the paper they’re printed on if California Rep. David Dreier (search) has his way. He is sponsoring a bill that would replace the old paper card with one that is more like a credit card.

The card would basically have a photo embedded on it, and it would have an algorithm strip on the back that would outlines someone’s status in this country — whether he or she is an American citizen, living here on a visa or work permit or any other status, Dreier, a Republican, said.

Dreier said he supports the system because he believes an unforgeable Social Security card will stem the flow of illegal aliens to this country and will eventually force those already in the country illegally to return home. It would also mean that legal residents would have to endure the agony of a trip to the Social Security Administration (search) to get a new card before changing jobs. But Dreier said he believes ending document fraud is important to national security.

“Mohamed Atta (search), who flew one of the planes into the World Trade Center, had a valid driver’s license, and he was pulled over and he was told to appear in court after 9/11. So, this issue of document fraud is a serious one and I think that the American people are going to understand,” Dreier said.

Dreier’s bill might end up attached to a larger immigration reform bill (search) being pushed by Rep. James Sensenbrenner, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. Sensenbrenner has pushed for legislation that would make states conform to tougher standards when issuing driver’s licenses.

“American citizens have the right to know who is in their country, that people are who they say they are, and that the name on a driver’s license is the holder’s real name, not some alias,” Sensenbrenner said during the intelligence reform bill debate in November.

Oh yeah, that’s a real good idea  NOT!

Most SS cards are now issued prior to a child’s first birthday because without a SS#, parents can’t claim the child on their tax exemption.

Are the parents going to have to go down and stand in line with an infant to get a photo taken? Or will they have to submit a passport photo of their child? Either approach is going to be difficult to get a photo which identifies the baby.

What happens when the child turns 4 or 5 and no longer looks like the photo? Will it have to be retaken and the card re-issued?

You have the kid’s school pictures taken every year. What’s the big deal?

We print up about 200 or 300 magnetic cards cards with people’s pictures embedded on them every quarter at the college where I work. The whole thing for each one takes about 90 seconds.

When was the last time you went to the SS administration? Something simple usually requires at least half a day. The place is filled with wall to wall people. First you stand in one line to find out what line to stand in. Then you stand in another line to get a form to fill out. Then you stand in a third line to submit the form. Then the waiting process begins.

And you thinking having parents go there to have their children’s photos updated is a good idea? It’ll increase the number of people there requiring a whole day.

Unless one has personally “experienced” a visit to the SS office, it is not to be believed. First of all, just trying to contact them by phone takes an experienced telesalesperson who can simultaneously dial and never stop until it’s answered by the ubiquitous tape which leads to an extension no human speaks on - then on one’s arrival – the fun and games truly begin.

You haven’t even begone to play the SSA game until you have to apply for disability benefits. I swear you will be in line there for weeks, only to be told you don’t qualify and then you get to spend months in appeal, then and only then are you playing the SSA game!

A letter to your Senator or Representative detailing your problem with Social Security Administration often works wonders. SSA seems to understand his questions much better than yours. 😉

I hate Social welfarity.

People like me who are unemployed and not given a vocation will be indoctrinated into the New World order and forced to create ID cards for all of you. : (

The system is abused and broke and we are all being taken advantage of. If these people were not allowed to be in the country illegally and make up ID numbers than we would not have this problem. Its just a big tool for the beast.

Unless they burry your appeal in a storage facility under tons of granite. In which case you have to refile and go back to the lawyer.

I agree, this whole thing stinks BIG TIME and it is way too prophetic and Orwellian for my taste. My mother had her purse stolen two years ago and we had to go down to the SSA office. I went with her along with my oldest daughter (who was 2) and it is NO picnic at all! I guess our representatives think that we with young children have nothing to do and will have to get pictures done every year.

If the government would have followed the current immigration laws and allow border patrol agents and other law enforcement officers do their jobs and ENFORCE DEPORTATION, we would not be in the situation we are in now.

For the record, I am a daughter of immigrants. My parents came here from Hungary LEGALLY and waited ever so patiently for our government to allow them here. They also had to learn English in order to succeed in this country as well. No menus/ tv programs in Hungarian were around then and now…

This is another increase in Government interference in peoples lives which is unlikely to benefit citizens at all.

I prefer to think of ways of decreasing Government, not ways of increasing it.

I just refiled for like the 5th time. 10 pages of paper work. Ill take it to Social security and they will file it in the trash.
