I don’t know of anyone who has a problem understanding what is infallible teaching nor has a disagreement over what is infallible. Any priest would be able to tell you which Catholic believes are marked with the bond of infallibility.

No, I am not sure how you get there from my comments. I think Limbo was always presented as a possibility and not an authoritative teaching. But if it were presented as an authoritative teaching, Catholics would be bound to accept it as the teaching of the Church. Not all teachings put forth by Councils and Popes are infallible, but they are authoritative.

I got here from your comments because you insinuate that because a document was produced by a Council, it bears the marks of an infallible teaching of the church. You also wondered why people would think that a teaching of the Council would be “optional”.

So I am giving you teachings by the previous Popes and Councils and asking why you think they are optional? You now have come up with a new term … “authoritative”.

So, here are two teachings, one by a Pope, the other by a Council.

Pope Pius XII :
“In the present state there is no other way of communicating [sanctifying
grace] to the child who has not yet the use of reason [other than Baptism].
But, nevertheless, the state of grace at the moment of death is absolutely
necessary for salvation. Without it, it is not possible to attain
supernatural happiness, the beatific vision of God. An act of love can
suffice * for an adult to obtain sanctifying grace
and supply for the absence of Baptism; for the unborn child or for the newly
born, this way is not open.”

Pope Pius XI confirmed the existence of Limbo as a place lacking the Beatific Vision, but without the pain of punishment.

Council of Lyons II, 1274
“The souls of those who die in mortal sin or with original sin only, however, immediately descend to hell, yet to be punished with different punishments.”

So tell me why these are not “authoritative” as preached by valid Popes and Councils?*
