There is going to be a new Star Trek series, first airing in 2017:
The series will begin with a special preview broadcast on the CBS Television Network before running exclusively on CBS All Access, the network’s digital subscription video on demand and live streaming service.
It is also expected to be distributed around the world by CBS Studios International.

I was 10 when TOS (The Original Series) premiered. I was a young mother when TNG (the Next Generation) aired. When DS9 (Deep Space9) came in, I found it, in time, even more enjoyable than TNG (and it hasn’t dated even now). Had high hopes for Voyager but after 2 seasons, while I continued watching because hey, it’s STAR TREK, it really didn’t interest me, and I never even bothered with Enterprise though for all I know it may have been quite good.

However, as I approach 60 next year, having seen most of my (and my parents’) icons, childhood memories, childhood pleasures and treasures etc amped, revamped, and ultimately destroyed by Hollyweird, I don’t hold much hope. The entertainment industry has not had creative thoughts for decades now, and by ‘creative’ I mean something that does NOT riff off, genderbend, or ‘remake’. . EXCEPT in the areas of destruction. Zombies. . .full frontal nudity, crudity, and anything anti-hero and dark. . . that’s all over and just gets, in HW’s favorite terms, “Grittier and more real” (bwaha) meaning more sex and more deviance. But creative? Pah.

This is more likely to be Star Blech, I’m afraid.

Just my opinion. I’d be delighted to be proved wrong!!!
 
So long as they don’t fall into the trap that Voyager and Enterprise did. We don’t need cheap sex appeal to hold our interest.
 
As long as it isn’t taken over by political correctness as far too many tv shows have been in recent years, I’m very happy about this and eagerly await more details. I’m also very happy that the new show will not be related to the JJ Abrams films which have been rather sub-par (especially Into Darkness). Star Trek is actually I’ve always found an almost-without-exception clean and wholesome show that everyone can enjoy (I’m sure someone could point out one or two exceptions, but on the whole). Even Deep Space Nine, concerning intergalactic war, avoided gratuitous violence.

I think the new series will probably show relationships that were shown little or not at all on previous series.’ I hope I’m wrong. I think it probably will me more PC and wanting to keep up with the current times, so to speak.

I wouldn’t be super shocked to hear that the new series will feature an on-board same-sex marriage ceremony, sadly. I hope I’m wrong,
 
Given the way things have been going and the way the Abrams movies played out, not really.

I’ll watch the original series and the new fan-based creations. The best I’ve seen of the latter is Star Trek Continues:

I hope it is better than the profanation vomited onto the big screen with the last two movies.
 
I am excited. I watch ST re-runs all the time- not the original series but all the rest of them.

Enterprise dropped most of the cheap stuff about halfway through the first season. If I had known they were gonna come to their senses, I would not have stop watching during the original run. But I’m glad I eventually got back to it. It’s my hands-down favorite Trek.
 
This is just a vague feeling I have, but there has always been a strong optimistic attitude about the Star Trek series that seems out of place in today’s dark, gritty television landscape. I wonder how they will go about bridging that divide. Maybe it will use the recent Battlestar Galactica reboot as a template?
 
Good point. I prefer TOS because it is the most hopeful (and also because it has Jim, Spock & Bones!), but the others, for me, were too dark, as well as too ensemble-oriented.

I’ve heard the rumours that this going to be the long in development Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. And it will most likely star Bill Shatner in the lead role as an aging Kirk(he will apparently reprise the part specifically as Christopher Pine’s Kirk now old man) teaching the young recruits who will be new characters.

J.J. Abrams approached Shatner to reprise his role in Star Trek: Beyond next year reintroducing him as “Old Kirk” from the new timeline(but basically ignoring any real differences between the two versions of the character) leading into a part in the new tv series.
