I just bought a new statue of Mary for Christmas but her eyes are blue. I’m thinking that may start to really bug me and thought about repairing her eyes brown.
OTOH I could’ve sworn I once read something online that said that people in Jesus region could’ve been light haired and eyes. Can anyone help?

I don’t see anything wrong with painting the eyes if you’re good at it.
In fact, one year as I was putting out the crib and Nativity scene at my parish, I noticed (and couldn’t believe that nobody had previously) that Baby Jesus’ eyes were two colors! One brown, and one blue! A gifted artist friend in the parish took all the pieces home after the Christmas season had concluded and re-painted the whole set in more natural colors. (it was kind of garish).
The pastor and everyone else was delighted the following year. 😉

Is there any chance Mary had blue eyes?

Of course there’s a chance, but all cultures represent her in art as they do themselves.
The natural response to “mother”.
Check out the Japanese Madonna, and others in art.

I read something somewhere that said there were (are?) different Jewish tribes in that region and some were fair haired, blue eyes, while some were dark haired, dark eyes. Anyone have any information on that?

Does anyone know?

I have a beautiful statue of Our Lady of Fatima that has blue eyes.

Guess not.
I don’t think Our Lady will be upset with you if your statue / representation of her is less than accurate.
Relax. Just love her. It doesn’t matter what you think she looks like. We don’t exactly know what Jesus looks like either. (Shroud of Turin notwithstanding;))
