New Thanksgiving movie tradition

This year, we watched the Thanksgiving episodes of our favorite comedies on Netflix.

I just rewatched this after years of not seeing it. Did you notice that Snoopy and Woodstock seem to be saving the real Thanksgiving meal until they are alone and the kids have gone to Charlie Brown’s grandmother’s house for a real feast after the debacle of Snoopy’s meal? Was that selfish of Snoopy or what? I was baffled by his behavior.
 
Not necessarily our Thanksgiving tradition, but one of my favorite movies for the Christmas season is “A Christmas Carol”, the musical, starring Kelsey Grammer.

Watching this is part of our Thanksgiving tradition. We usually go for a long hike in the morning, to pre-burn some calories before the big Thanksgiving feast. Then we settle down for a Charlie Brown Thanksgiving Lunch - jelly beans, toast, pretzels, and popcorn.

There are some odd moments in the cartoon, though. Aside from Snoopy and Woodstock saving the meal for themselves (and Snoopy has always been more than a little narcissistic)…Woodstock is eating another bird. Something we normally associate with raptors, not little sparrows (or whatever he is).

Also check out the panicked expression on Snoopy’s face when Peppermint Patty reminds them they haven’t said Grace. I’ve never been sure if Snoopy is embarrassed at the faux pax (faux paw?) of forgetting to say Grace, or at not being able to say Grace.

I always like the prayer Linus says, like the moment in the Christmas special when he quotes from Luke.

My daughter and son and I have started watching “The Fantastic Mr. Fox” each Thanksgiving. It’s a delightful movie that both kids and adults can enjoy, the stop motion animation is beautiful, and the autumnal setting and the big feast the animals have near the end seems very Thanksgiving-y. (There’s even a Catholic rabbit.) We first saw it during its initial release at Christmastime, when my wife had her female friends over for a party and we were told to vacate the house. I took the kids to see it in an empty theater - we were the only ones there. I’ve always enjoyed it since.

I should check that out, since I like Wes Anderson movies and my son recently read the book upon which it is based for a school assignment (the author of the book is by Roald Dahl, by the way, something I hadn’t been aware of when the movie came out).
