Friars are indeed Catholic. Friars differ from monks in that they are called to a life of poverty in service to a community, rather than cloistered asceticism and devotion. Whereas monks live cloistered away from the world in a self-sufficient community, friars are supported by donations or other charitable support. Friars are priests, not all monks are priests. They can be brothers too. Priests, as you probably know, are allowed to celebrate Mass and perform the Sacraments of the Church. Brothers cannot. They are not ordained. They simply live a monastic or active life of prayer.

Friars may be either priests or brothers. Similarly monks may be either priests or brothers.
Monks are members of religious orders who live in monasteries. Benedictines, Trappists, and Carthusians are all monks.
Friars are members of mendicant religious orders and live outside monasteries. These include Franciscans, Dominicans, and Carmelites.
Part of the difference comes in how they support themselves. Monks live away from the world in a self-supporting community. Friars depend on donations for support. Both monks and friars take vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience.
Priests may be members of religious order or they may be diocesan priests. Diocesan priests (most of the priests you find in parishes) do not belong to religious orders. Instead they work in a particular diocese and pledge obedience to their bishop.
