New to Rosary

I was born and raised Catholic though I have always been what I think most would consider “inactive”. I went to church every Sunday until I moved out of my parents house, then I fell out of the habit and only went occasionally. My wife and I are recommitting ourselves to the Catholic Church. As far as I can remember though I’ve never actually prayed the Rosary.

After doing some reading here and other places I feel like it is quite important for me to start doing.

I just downloaded the iRosary app for my iPhone. It seems like a great app so far, it keeps track of where you are and what mysteries I’m on and all that. It will help me keep track of it as I don’t see myself not losing a physical Rosary.

I guess I’m just posting to see what others thought of the Rosary and any ways that praying the Rosary has helped in your lives. My mom recently told me that she and her husband did a Novena with the Rosary to pray for a new job for him and he got a new job within a week or two of that which was awesome!

The main benefit of the Rosary is that it helps us to pray. St. Paul tells us to pray all the time (1 Thess 5:15) but most people don’t know what to pray about (beyond whatever their current wish-list is). Prayer is so much more than petitioning God. It is praising Him, worshiping Him, loving Him.

Other forms of prayer can be complex and time-consuming for Catholics who are “new” or facing the concerns of the world. Thus, the Divine Office (Liturgy of the Hours) and daily recitation of the entire book of Psalms (I am told religious in some monasteries used to do this) are beyond most.

When we use the Rosary as a template, we can enter deep contemplation for 15 minutes or so on various events in the lives of Jesus and Mary. We do this while reciting a few simple prayers.

P.S. It is always good to hear reports of prayers answered desirably. Please remember, neither the Rosary nor Novenas are magical formulae to get what you want. The main benefit of a prayerful life is closeness to God.

I carry my rosary with me, when I get the chance, to do an evening walk. It makes the walk both physically and spiritually beneficial. It’s close to my heart. You can also use your rosary to do the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. I love that as well, because you can sing (chant) it.

It’s my fav prayer, though I would recommend getting a printed guide over an app on a smart phone… As much as I love my own smart phone, I think there might be a tendancy to get distracted by the niftyness of the app over the prayer it’s self, particularly something as meditative as the rosary.

I’ll attach a PDF of a guide I made for the CDD class I taught (6th grade). Honestly I use it my self all the time, particularly when I decide I want to look up my own bible passages to pair with each mystery.

I also have a great little pamphlet which comes with art associated with the mystery, as well as a bible snippet to read. God bless, and welcome to the wonderful world of praying the rosary.

I guess I’m just posting to see what others thought of the Rosary and any ways that praying the Rosary has helped in your lives.

Ahh, my story is a long one, but I’ll give you the super short version
I was Baptized Catholic as a baby but wasn’t raised Catholic. I remember when I was little having a glow in the dark Rosary but I never knew what it was for… it was (as far as I knew) a “cool glow in the dark necklace”.
Fast forward to 2005. I was living as a witch, married to my husband who was also a witch. I had a massive heart attack (widow maker type) and nearly died. I had a type of near death experience in which it was made known to me very clearly that I was not supposed to be pagan. After a few weeks in ICU I went home, and stopped all witchy stuff immediately. I prayed from that time on almost daily because I knew I wasn’t supposed to be pagan but I didn’t know what I was supposed to believe considering there are all these different beliefs in the world today.
Last year I got a sudden urge to pray the Rosary, but I didn’t know how and didn’t have one. I looked up online a picture of one and taught myself how to pray it. It was odd at first because here I was with a printed out picture of a Rosary and lots of pages with different prayers (none of which I knew). The first few times I prayed it, it took me hours to get through 5 decades!
I prayed the Rosary every night (because I felt like I just HAD TO pray it) for like 1 1/2 weeks, then I started getting dreams where people would say “You’re supposed to be Catholic”. I tried ignoring them but they didn’t stop. Finally I called my local parish and told them I had to speak with someone because “I guess I’m supposed to be Catholic” LOL. Being Catholic was the last thing on my mind when all this happened, so I was kind of taken back by it all.
I met a woman in the parking lot who ended up being my sponsor and gave me a ‘real’ Rosary and she signed me up for RCIA. The kicker is, she wasn’t even supposed to be there and got a weird feeling that she had to go by the parish.
I’ve left out A LOT… but the key to this is, I feel that if I hadn’t prayed the Rosary I may not have been open to hearing God call me, if that makes sense.

Thank you for the comments. I completed my first Rosary ever today. I agree it is great to just focus on Jesus and Mary for a little bit. While I can’t say I had any life changing event (not that I expected it) I can certainly appreciate how this will help keep me focused on the right type of things. I hope a daily Rosary will quickly become a habit for me!

I do know that saying the Rosary is not intended to be a prayer to get what you want from God and I don’t plan on using it as such.

Thanks for the comment! What is a Chaplet of Divine Mercy? I’ve never heard that term before. I think I’ll google it.

Great idea on doing it while on a walk. Today I did part of the rosary while getting ready for the day and the rest while driving. A much better use of my time than listening to whatever lame music would have been on the radio!!!

I’ll look into getting a physical Rosary and printed guide (I downloaded your PDF, Thanks!). So far I think the iRosary is nice though. I did not find it distracting. It keeps track of where you are with a simple flick of the finger so I can do it while driving. It even makes a little chime when I’m done with the 10th Hail Mary so I know when its time to change.

thanks for this post as it brought back a really good memory for me i recalled the time when i remembered first saying my Rosary. i would rush it, but as i got older, i learned to teach myself not to do so. of course, back then i was just a little kid now i take my time when i say it and i say it with meaning. i didn’t know they had iphone app for the Rosary.

I was first introduced to the Chaplet on a hike around the grounds of St. Michael’s Abbey in Silverado, CA. Actually, nobody remembered the proper chant so we made one up as we needed the cadence for the hike.

You can chant/sing the Rosary as well. Most Vietnamese Catholics I know do. I sometimes chant in English, too (Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be only) but usually switch to spoken halfway through one decade as chanting is much slower. I think it can help with meditation, however.

I was first introduced to the Chaplet on a hike around the grounds of St. Michael’s Abbey in Silverado, CA. Actually, nobody remembered the proper chant so we made one up as we needed the cadence for the hike.

I actually know of 3 different tunes. The most popular can be seen on EWTN at 3pm weekdays. They do the the Chaplet in song on Saturdays at 3pm.
