New to Vespers... Help?

I’ve recently found myself with more time on my hands and my early evening hours free, so I’ve decided to venture into Vespers at the local abbey. My first few visits have passed and I’m still lost! Does anyone know of a website that has the exact schedule laid out so I can follow it all nice and easy to read? I’ll also need to find some source for the reading’s listing, that’s where I get lost bigtime. The music I’m fine with, but the psalms, I don’t know where or how to find them!

So if anyone could give me a bit of info as to how its all laid out and a link to some resource where I can find the proper page in the LOTH book that would be great!

I see you are in Orange County. Do you mind me asking which order (I’m guessing Benedictine or Norbertine) your local Abbey is?

The monastic Office differs a little from the Liturgy of the Hours in some cases, though the general structure is the same.

I don’t have a link at the moment, but I think I’ve seen a link to the Guide to the LOTH floar across these forums before… I’ll try to find it and post again…

Yes, it’s the Norbertine Fathers of St. Michael’s Abbey. Thanks for the help, I just can’t for the life of me get on the right page for the psalms, I’m at the right date (it’s on the top of the page) but what’s been listed isn’t the psalm, but the short reading. The psalms must be variable according to the date, but the “Evening Prayer” section doesn’t have them listed. So when they get to the psalms, I’m left fumbling. Shortly after I’m back on track thanks to my notebook, but I would prefer being literally on the same page the whole time rather than 1/2 the time

been ransacking the net today, and found two things: a website universalis reliable? Does anyone know if it has a latin counterpart? (would be the new office) I also found an iphone app by universalis the same people? anyone use it? Like it?

Briefly, yes, the Psalms do vary by day.

In the current arrangement of the Divine Office/Liturgy of the Hours, the Psalms are on a 4-week cycle. So each week (which is numbered) has its own group of Psalms. So, you would determine which week in the Psalter you are in (we are currently in Week I- you would want a guide to the LOTH for this) and choose the day of the week it is.

I asked about the orders, because some orders say more Psalms per day (the Rule St. Benedict calls for the monks to pray all the Psalms in one week, so some still pray more Psalms than are in the LOTH.)

However, I am not very knowledgeable about the way the Norbertines pray the Office. What is the title of the book you use to pray Vespers?

Universalis is **not **reliable because it uses a different translation than that used in authorized Catholic breviaries.
