Our parish has started to educate the congregation at large the new translations coming this Advent.

Our diocese has had workshops earlier this year but this is the first time I have seen it at the parish level.

They are including inserts in the bulletin and will be starting classes early September.

How have other parishes started to instruct the people on the new translation?

My pastor started to instruct the people a few weeks ago.

We’re having two sessions, each repeated once, this month after Sunday masses, one last Sunday and this coming Sunday on the new translation in general, and another the following two Sundays specifically going through the new responses, and the choir will present some of the new mass parts they’ve been practicing.

Also last spring there were a series of bulletin inserts describing what changes are coming and why, or one week it was a sort of glossary giving the meanings of words that will appear in the new translation that might not be known by everyone, like “consubstantial.”

Our parish administrator originally wanted our priest to sprinkle parts of the new translation into the mass we do now to ease the transition, but he hasn’t done this, which I think was the right decision. The hybrid translation would have been a strange, unapproved liturgy and would have confused a lot of people.

I should mention also that we’ve ordered some sort of laminated cards with the mass parts on them to help people next Advent. We considered buying new hymnals but decided to wait until at least the second generation hymnals came along with improved music options (that was the thinking, anyway).

Our parish hasn’t done anything yet and, with the Pastor moving across the country next week with no replacement in sight, I don’t know when or if it’s going to happen.

Obviously the annual “Sunday Missal” from Novalis will contain it so everyone will be able to follow if they get theirs when we bring them in. In addition the CCCB has released “Celebrate in Song”, its supplement to the CBW III, which contains the text of the Ordinary of the Mass, the ICEL chant setting, 3 new settings commissioned by the CCCB, in addition to new hymns.

Our diocese’s priests and pastoral associates will be getting training in October. I assume we will be waiting until after that for anything at the parish level. I’ve been watching this process for years now while the Pastor couldn’t have been less interested. Because of the change in our Lectionary, he seemed not to realize that there were two different ‘translation projects’ ongoing.

Our parish has some information in the bulletin every week. And I think one of our deacons is going to give some talks on it. Meanwhile, I’m waiting for my copy of the revised GIRM to come in the mail.

We’re in a very small parish, but our priest periodically brings up a specific change at the end of Mass during the time for announcements, and explains what the difference is between the old translation and the new translation, to better appreciate why the change is being made and what it’s trying to convey. We also have commentary in the bulletin.

As we progress closer in time to the implementation, they might offer more-- I don’t know specifically.

Went to Mass this evening in my parish, at the end leaflets (actually an A4 sheet folded in half) were handed out giving the new texts of the responses, Penitential Rite, Gloria and Creed.

Yes we are going to have laminated cards in the pews as well.
The choir will be teaching their new parts as well.

I hope the parishes that haven’t done anything yet don’t wait till the last minute. People may assume that this was some new thing that just got put together.

Our priest told us that if we have friends and family that only come to Christmas and Easter that they should come now otherwise they will be confused when they come Christmas morning.

Our priest is also using this time to instruct on the mass in general as well.
I think helping people understand the why behind it will help them accept it better.

Should be interesting. I am excited to start really getting into it.

before Mass begins our priest will go over a specific prayer or part of the liturgy or creed that will be changing and he will teach us how it will change. there is also something in the bulletin each week of the part he is going over. they had a class in late spring that i really wanted to attend, but was unable to and i am sure they will have another class this fall.

We have had articles in our Sunday Bulletin over the past five weeks. Starting tomorrow (Monday) we will have 2 (yes, only 2) 1 hour instruction sesions on the changes this week. 2 hours for a parish with over 1600 members.
As an aside, today at Mass Fr. anon was letting everyone know these sessions would be held this week. He went on to say how many calls he has had by Parishoners worried about the upcoming changes in the Missal. He wanted to assure everyone that there will NOT BE any return to latin, NO Ad Orientum, No going back to the OLD DAYS.
