New Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral in Kyiv - video

Here is a video of the construction of the new Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Cathedral in Ukraine’s capital city Kyiv. You can see how through 2009 it is being constructed in the video - a modern construction. It will be interesting to see how the interior will be decorated - the iconostas, etc. The late Josyp Cardinal Slipyj of the Ukrainian Catholic Church, who spent 18 years in the Soviet Gulag before being released to Rome, always wished to be buried in Kyiv some day, the spiritual capital of Ukraine. Praise God for a new Church but there is a real danger that the structure not be destroyed by communist sympathizers or others, even to this day. Here’s hoping God watches over it, as he does over all of Ukraine.

I wasn’t trying to be overly critical. I have great love for Orthodox architecture. It is some of the most beautiful in the Christian world. I’ve just seen such plain churches built in the the U.S. that I was hoping for a more ornate looking building.

Well. I guess we will have to wait for the finished product. I think it’s new + traditional to perhaps set a new beginning for the Church after years in the catacombs in the Soviet Union. Ukraine had and has many beautiful Churches, Ukrainian Catholic and Orthodox - at least the ones which survived Stalin who destroyed hundreds of historical churches throughout Ukraine. He was even bent on destroying St. Sophia’s in Kyiv until a group of Heritage protectors in the West stopped him with their protests.

Well, if you don’t mind rock music, here’s a video of some of Kyiv’s (old spelling Kiev) churches and landscapes to the tune of “І Все Буде Добре!” or “I Vse Bude Dobre” or “Everything’s gonna be alright” by Ukraine’s number one rock group “Okean Elzy” with pictures of Kyiv. I love my UGCC bretheren - it cannot be any other way in Australia - where about 50% of Ukrainians are UGCC…

But even though Ukraine today is solidly Orthodox, it is we Ukrainians who uphold the Faith of Christ! We Ukrainian Fithful must stand together! (in love).

Hi Andrew Phillip. Thanks for warm words. No, not in Kyiv today (in Canada now mate ) !

Perevybory…Doesn’t look good right now, and I think Patriarchs Lubachivsky and Filaret may be slightly worried. Polls haven’t closed yet, but Yulia Tymoshenko is accusing Yanukovych of bringing in 2,000 thugs from Yanek’s stronghold in Donetsk to surround important buildings. There was so much hope in the Orange Revolution for real change from the thugocracy and mafia clans that ruled Ukraine under Kuchma, and now it looks if Yanukovych wins, the Donetsk clan will call the shots on the running of Ukraine. (Though he would not be able to control the Verkhovana Rada yet).

The Party of Regions is not a pan-Ukrainian party (regions!) and I assume Andrew you do not look favourably on Yanukovych establishing Russian as an official state language with Ukrainian. Too many millions of people under the Soviet Union sacrificed to see Ukraine’s language, culture, and Churches survive the Soviet Russian onslaught to see it all for naught now. Here is hoping that things turn out for the best in Ukraine!
