Hi @guanophore,

You can ask the forum “bot” to help you with the tutorials.

You can do it by using your PM function, and you can complete the tutorials there.

You can bring up his name by using the “at” symbol before it, and he’ll help you.

If I were to do it here for example, it will bring him up.

His name is discobot.

There is also an advanced tutorial, too.

When you complete a tutorial, you’ll get a certificate afterwards.

I currently know how to do the following things:

@discobot start new user
Starts one of the following interactive narratives: new user, advanced user.
@discobot roll 2d6
@discobot quote

Thank you, I have read about this, and tried it, but I don’t understand how to make it work. I opened a message and put the at bot I read about into it, but did not get to a tutorial. Sorry to be such a dunce. I have spent years on CAF and now find myself completely lost with this new interface.
@discobot
I have found this in several places, but there were not instructions on where to put it! When I enter it into help, I just get more posts with this address, but no instructions. There is no “help” that explains how to use it!
Hi! To find out what I can do, say @discobot display help.
I don’t mean to be such a dunce, but my laptop does not take verbal commands, and even if it did, I would not know where to be when I said the “say”.

@discobot start new user

Yep, found this too, I am glad to know the “bot” knows how to do these things, but what I need is to know how <> can do them!!

I thought th @ was a twitter thing, and I don’t use twitter. Can anyone be more specific? You have all only given me what I have already found on here, and I can’t figure out how to use this information. God bless you all for trying!

I thought th @ was a twitter thing, and I don’t use twitter.
Here at CAF, the @ with a username sends a notification to the user. That has nothing to do with twitter. When you use it to invoke discobot, it interprets certain commands if they follow.

Try posting a reply to this (or any) thread with the following content, ignoring the shading which appears around the @username:

@discobot start new user

Then look for the notification. I’ll explain how to do that in my next message.

Thank you. I kept asking the same question about a dozen times in various places, and somehow I got a PM that had the link in it. I am not sure how it finally worked, perhaps the system detected what I was asking? Anyway, I made my way through the beginning tutorial and now am trying to access the advanced one, but am having the same problem. When I use the @discobot, it responds “these are the things I know how to do” but I cannot figure out how to access the material for the tutorial.

I am on a laptop without any audio capability so I cannot “say” anything.

Hi @guanophore,

Don’t feel bad about asking any questions…

This new forum is supposed to be set up to be more mobile-friendly for use with phones and tablets/portable devices.

The reason that it is suggested to call up “discobot” with your PM system and use the tutorials there, is so that you can get credit for doing the tutorials, and so that you can get badges and receive the forum certificates for completing the tutorials.

The way some of the new message board forums are set up, when you want to get someone’s attention on the forum, and let them know that you would like them to see your post, is to use the “at” symbol. You’re right–it’s used in Twitter.

It’s also used in some forums, too.

The forum bot responds to a few commands, and one of the things that he does on this forum, is help with the tutorials.

When he responds to your at prompt, you tell him that you want to “start the new user tutorial.”

Give him a moment or so to respond, and he’ll start it with you.

To bring up your PM system, you’ll see a message envelope icon under your username icon in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.

Click on your username icon.

When you click on it, you’ll see the little envelope underneath it, and you can get to your messages that way.

You can start a message by typing a member’s name in the username section.

Then you would type your message in the reply box like you usually would.

I can bring up @discobot for you here, and then show you what to choose when he comes up.

Thank you for your efforts. I have gotten this far. I cannot figure out how to get the tutorial to run. Somehow the basic one started itself and ran, but I don’t know how it worked, so I cant get the advanced one to run.

It’s alright…

What I kept forgetting to do, is to allow discobot to reply.

So, what you need to do is bring up discobot by doing “at” discobot.

Then he’ll run through his list of what he can do.

When he gets to start new user tutorial, respond back and type in a new Reply,

start new user tutorial

Every time that you respond to him, you have to hit Reply, just like you would if you were typing a post to someone on the forum.

… I’ll explain how to do that in my next message.
So here’s what happened to me when I did that:

First, I got a notification. It is announced by the small green ball next to my avatar (currently pink):

(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

I click on my avatar, and a list of notifications appears. The message from discobot is currently at the top of the list:

(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

Then I click on the notification from discobot, and it takes me to a private message sent by discobot. If you follow the instructions contained in the message, it will send you more messages with further instructions, leading you step-by-step through the New User Tutorial.

See how that goes, and let us know if you have further questions.

I very much appreciate your efforts to help me. I did use this method to get through the new user tutorial. But since I don’t know how it suddenly appeared, I am unable to move forward to the advanced tutorial.

What I need to do is “bring up the discobot”. This makes it sound as if I were to type @discobot somewhere, it would appear. This does not happen on my laptop. I have, however, seen the response “this is what I can do”, but I am at a loss as to how to get the bot to do any of it.

I have posted several “replies” asking for the advanced tutorial.

It seems like it would be helpful if there were an active link that might be used to access it.

I am on a laptop without any audio capability so I cannot “say” anything.
In this context, “say” is figurative language. You actually type those things and post it to a reply. The reply could be in a thread or in a private message.

Does one just start typing @discobot into any screen?! I have tried it many places, in messages, and out. I keep gettting the above response in the PM, but I do not know how to use that information to actually activate a tutorial.

Do you know where I could get to a link that would take me to the advanced tuturial?
