New Vatican document to clarify Summum Pontificum

Vatican, Dec. 31, 2007 (CWNews.com) - The Vatican will soon issue a new document clarifying the terms of Summum Pontificum, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone (bio - news) has revealed.

Confirming reports that have circulated around Rome in recent weeks, the Vatican Secretary of State told the Italian weekly Famiglia Cristiana that the Ecclesia Dei commission will issue instructions to “clarify the criteria for the application of the motu proprio” in which Pope Benedict XVI (bio - news) broadened access to the traditional Latin Mass.

Cardinal Bertone said that the new document was needed because there have been some “confused reactions” to the motu proprio. In fact some Vatican officials-- most notably Archbishop Malcolm Ranjith, the secretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship-- have energetically criticized bishops who have failed to accept the papal directive.

Cardinal Bertone took a more conciliatory approach to the disputes that have arisen in the aftermath of the Pope’s move to restore the traditional Mass. The Italian prelate told Famiglia Cristiana that had been widely misinterpreted, and the new instruction from the Ecclesia Dei commission would attempt to clear up misconceptions.

“Some people have charged that the Pope was rejecting the Council’s [Vatican II] teaching,” Cardinal Bertone told the Italian magazine, emphasizing that this interpretation is completely unfounded. At the same time, he also dismissed the theory that Pope Benedict hopes to replace the Novus Ordo Mass, making the “extraordinary form” the single liturgical usage of the future. That is equally inaccurate, the cardinal said.

Cardinal Bertone did not indicate when the new liturgical directive would appear. Some Vatican-watchers believe that the instruction from Ecclesia Dei will appear within a matter of days; others have said that it could be several weeks before it is published.

I have never understood precisely what was unclear in the first place other than a few(?) Bishops, mostly in Europe, don’t like the TLM.

I don’t understand what needs to be clarified either.

It is a shame that disobedience is such a problem thanks to the effects of original sin.

sigh

Is it just too much to ask that our church leaders allows us to properly worship and adore our Jesus?..

I pray Our Blessed Mother will make things better, and take good care of our beloved Pope… 🙂

From the Dec-28-2007 Catholic News Service article, Pope’s calendar in 2008 confirms life doesn’t slow down after 80
Sometime early in the year, the Pontifical Commission “Ecclesia Dei” plans to issue a document clarifying questions that have arisen regarding the pope’s 2007 document relaxing restrictions on use of the Tridentine Mass. Sources said the pope personally is interested in removing ambiguities, and will sign off on the new document.

New Ecclesia Dei document
Today the Catholic News Service gives a summary of Pope Benedicts plans for 2008. Among them are the new document from the Ecclesia Dei comission which will clarify questions that have arisen over Summorum Pontificum. When a document comes out from a Vatican congregation sometimes hair-splitters who dont like what the document says will say that it is a document of low authority because it is not the work of the Pope but a Vatican department and so it effectively gets ignored. A document from a congregation can acquire greater authority if it is signed by the Pope himself in forma specifica. The good news from the Catholic News Service is that this appears to be what is going to happen. Here is the relevant paragraph.

I have great hopes for this document as there appear to be cases where the Motu Proprio is being ignored or misinterpreted to prevent a more ready access to the 1962 missal for those who request it and various specious excuses are put forward to block access. Sometimes it is said that a Mass can only happen if the people requesting it are from that particular parish but then on the other hand when people from a parish have made a request they have been told that they cant have it because there is already provision about twenty miles away in another parish. Lets hope this new document will clear up some of the recent obstacles.

Card. Bertone on the instruction about Summorum Pontificum
CATEGORY: SESSIUNCULUM — Fr. John Zuhlsdorf @ 12:16 pm
Andrea Tornielli on his blog for il Giornale has a glimpse of an interview with the Cardinal Secretary of State, H.E. Tarcisio Bertone, to be published soon in the weekly La Famiglia Cristiana. Card. Bertone mentions the instruction on Summorum Pontificum which will be issued by the Pontificial Commission Ecclesia Dei.
Here is my translation:
Concerning the Motu Proprio about the Tridentine Mass: "There are plans to fine tune an Instruction which will settle clearly the criteria for the application of the Motu Proprio. There have been some distorted reactions. Some even got to the point of accusing the Pope of having renounced the teaching of the Council. On the other hand, there are those who interpret the Motu Proprio as authorization for the return of the pre-Conciliar rite only. Both positions are wrong.“On the other hand, there are those who interpret the Motu Proprio as authorization for the return of the pre-Conciliar rite only. Both positions are wrong.”
The instruction, I am told, will probably come out before Easter. The first part will no doubt deal with overly restrictive interpretations of the provisions of the Motu Proprio.

I will be interested to see what my diocese does with this “clarification”.

Some of these bishops think they are doing the right thing when they issue their own interpretations and “norms” for the motu proprio. This does need to get tackled in this document.

There are some other things to clarify–certain little questions, if I recall, to do with the calendar and other things.

Well maybe it will help those that desire the EF to get a more honest response to their requests.🤷 I heard we do not have even one potential new priest in our Diocese. We are closing chapels and combining parishes because of this shortage.

Yet the FSSP is brimming over and bursting at the seams. The places that the TLM is welcomed with open arms are growing. Let us keep praying for the Bishops to open their eyes to what is happening and why.

Are you in my diocese? I hadn’t heard about any parishes closing…

Greensburg, the decisions are to be made this month on what stays and what goes.
This year many such decisions are also pending next door to you here in Altoona-Johnstown. Five priests are retiring, only one is being ordained, and there are several with rapidly deteriorating health.

We had seven priests die this year. Three retired but still filling in and four active. None to be ordained this year.🤷
