New version of Navarre Bible New Testament forthcoming

I don’t have a whole lot of information about this yet, but as a professor, I get information on forthcoming titles from book publishers from time to time. I received a catalog today from Four Courts Press in Ireland, and they have listed that a new version of the Navarre Bible will be published in Summer 2008. Neither their own website or Scepter Press lists any information about this, so I will tell you the scant information that I know. Here is what the advertisement says (word for word):

The Navarre Bible: New Testament
A large-format volume with new commentary
ISBN 978-1-84682-147-9 hardback 1200 pages
65 Euros / 50 British pounds
Summer 2008
(Scepter Press)

The picture shows the cover, which very simply says The Navarre Bible at top in capital letters, Times New Roman Font. At the bottom of the cover it simply says New Testament in the same font, all caps. In the middle is what appears to be the icon of Christ Pantocrator, and the rest of the background appears to look like the faded gold gilding of an ancient icon. The picture also makes the volume look slightly more square than earlier volumes, although it’s still rectangular. (It’s a lovely cover.) I should make it clear that this is most definitely NOT The Navarre Bible: New Testament Compact Edition. This seems to be something completely different, and I haven’t been able to find any other information on it. I’ll keep everyone apprised if I find out anything else.
 
I just bought Gospel and Acts, and I’m fixing to buy the Pauline Epistles. Does this mean my stuff is already outdated???

BTW, I really, REALLY enjoyed the Old Testament Navarre and I’m thoroughly enjoying the Gospels and Acts right now.

Yep, that’s it! It sounds like it’s going to be great.

BTW… it doesn’t mean your old stuff is outdated. It’s just a different version that has a slightly different commentary.

It sounds like the main difference is that the original volume had detailed commentaries on individual verses and short sections, whereas this version shortens the line-by-line commentaries in favor of much more substantial introductions.

I think he’s talking about the commentary, not the sacred scripture.

And in which case it looks like indeed, it is outdated, because it clearly mentions the commentary is more extensive than in the individual volumes.
 
Thanks so much for this wonderful post!

This certainly looks intriguing – I wish we had some more information about the edition. I wonder if it is a single volume edition of the NT books with all the original commentary (as well as the Revised Standard Version and New Vulgate texts) or if there is truly a different commentary here.

I see it listed for pre-order here, here, and here.

May I ask, as people find more information, that they add to this thread?

Is there any chance they’ll do the Navarre Bible for PC? It would really be more convenient.
 
More poking around the web reveals that the European publisher now has a web page. Unfortunately, it contains little information: “A large-format volume with new commentary.”

However, we now have an ISBN-13 number: 978-1-84682-147-9.

I was trying to identify if there was a new Spanish translation that could account for the promised “new commentary.” My understanding is that the omnibus Spanish editions published in Spain and the US are collections of the commentary published in earlier individual volumes. So far, I am unable to find new Spanish material that could account for the promised “new commentary.”

So, I find myself wondering if either (a) this is a new omnibus edition in a new format, but with the same material in the current versions; (b) new material was translated for this edition that was previously untranslated from the Spanish editions; or (c) if there was new material developed for this English edition not in the Spanish edition.

It is very likely I am missing something – so if you have any further information, please let us know.

Please assist me in how to puchase the Navarre. I want to buy it one book at a time, but I want the books with the most complete commentary, etc. I want to start with the NT, but see several versions. Can anyone please assist me in identifying the titles or the covers that I would want to purchase if I am looking for the most complete commentary?

I personally purchased the readers edition of the New Testament.
It came in three books -
  1. Gospels & Acts;
  2. The Letters of Saint Paul;
  3. Revelation and Hebrews and Catholic Letters.
I googled it and found it somewhat inexpensive as compared to the individual volumes combined.

I think when I got them it was around $35 for each volume, but I can’t remember which online store I got them from, so again I would say to google them on their shopping channel, and go for the cheapest price.

The individual volumes have a little bit more information on the background of the books, but the readers edition has almost as much, if not the same amount.

The Navarre Study Bible is published by Scepter Press (the American publisher of Opus Dei), and it is entirely faithful to the Magesterium. It contains the RSV-CE, commentary, and the text of the Latin Vulgate all on one page. It’s outstanding, but it’s also expensive. It’s available in 10 hardcover volumes of around $40 each. There is also a version of the New Testament in 12 softcover volumes for slightly less, and an Abridged New Testament without the introductory essays and Vulgate for about $40 total. Also, as stated above, there’s the new single volume version available. I believe the most complete commentary is the 10 hardcover volume set.

I agree that this is the way to buy it. All told, it will be a 10 volume set.

Amazon has it, as well as getfed.com and catholiccompany.com
 
The good news is that the Navarre bible has come out in the New Testament edition. The book is 10 in. by 7.5in. with 1066 pages and the lettering is black and red. It includes maps, and pages have the RSV translation on top, New Latin Vulgate in the middle, followed by commentary. I do believe they will eventually come out with an OT version as well. I found the best price on this book at allcatholicbooks.com . It is a hardcover book, with a color jacket as previously described. It is much larger than the “compact edition” and well worth having. If you want to “hi light” verses or commentary I would suggestion buying the paperback books as well. I have bought a few of those on ebay for under $10, and as I said they are good for marking up. The new edition I will say is much nicer, and doubt you would want to underline or mark anything in this book. It is heavy so keep that in mind…🙂
 
I was looking for commentary and someone suggested Navarre Bible. I saw some sample, and I like that it’s more on the spiritual side, less on the technical side. IOW, more for worship than for academics.

I’m wondering about the different versions. The one the covers the NT in three volumes seems great. There is also a new expanded single-volume NT that has different commentary and takes broader strokes.

I was able to review the same Matthew sections for both versions. I’m leaning toward the older Navarre.

Anyone have both?
 
I have not seen the 3 book version of the NT, but I do have the new single version, and a paper back single book older version of the gospel of Matthew. I also have the 7 book copy of the OT, and as far as commentary goes they are all good. The newer single version is a much larger book than the older versions, but the amount of commentary is the same or more in most cases. The paper back is 216 pages, while the single NT is 100 pages (for the gospel of Matthew), but 2 pages of the paper back occupy 1 page of the one book NT. In other words you end with about the same amount of commentary for either version, all though it has been updated for the newer version…:🙂
 
Sorry, I have the 3 volume NT version but not the single volume one. I simply love my set, but I understand the single volume has even more commentary (which I could not imagine… often I have 2 or 3 verses on two pages with the remainder occupied by commentary!).

What I noticed with the Gospels, is that it averages about 7-9 pages per chapter, depending upon the author.
 
I would not reccommend some one to buy the newer version if the already have a copy of the older versions. In my case I had just started on Jeff Cavins great adventure in the parish that I belonged, and all though I had and old copy of the St Joseph bible, the commentary was not as in depth. I started looking at some of the pages in the Navarre, and decided to invest in it. I first bought the gospel of St Matthew, and Revelation in paper back form for 7 dollars apiece on ebay, then came across the single volume NT, and it being in hardcover and for 53 I decided to buy it. The paper is a softer color than the paper used in the 7 volume OT. It also has a red indexing ribbon so that you can mark where you left off. I would only suggest that one should buy the one that fits thier budget, as I have seen from my 7 volume OT and my single volume NT that both have great commentary. If you are interested in a bible study course tune into EWTN on Sat. mornings. If you are in the east it would be on at 2 in the afternoon, on the west it is 11 in the morning and you can see the great adventure as presented by Jeff Cavins…

I purchased the new Navarre New Testament Expanded Edition (2008) from CatholicFamilyCatalog.com

It is not listed yet on his website but he can get it for you. I bought mine from him in early December. It has over 1000 pages of Scripture and commentary. It has the Scriptures in Latin on each page also. It cost $79.95 but it was well worth the price.
