Hello,

I had a question, I was given a NWT jehovah witness bible a year ago. I have had it in my closet, and I do not want this in my house anymore.

How can I dispose of this? Trash? Fire? etc…

Okay, I really don’t feel this bible is a Bible of the word of God, so I don’t need to take it in to my parish.

I can just dispose of it like I would to a Harry Potter book?🤷😛 lol

(Not that I don’t like Harry potter books fyi)😊

The only thing that you could use it for is for apologetic purposes. I have the book of Morman on my bookself for times I may need it when discussing my faith with Mormans. But if you do keep it around I would recommend writing a note in it that it has been used by you for apologetic purposes only and is to be disregarded, just in case something happens to you and that it does not get passed on to family as being approved by you. It would be good to learn the errors in it and then clearly make them known in the book so when of if it does get into someone elses hands it will be easily spotted.

I think you should call a priest and he can burn it. Then he can say a prayer over you and your house so that you do not have any demonic visits when you sleep.

I would toss it with nary a second thought! OK, maybe one. It should go into recycling.

I do wish they would re-title that thing to be more accurate, say, The New World Transliteration of the Holy Scriptures.

Help. You feel pretty strongly about that my friend!

I know it is a favorite excuse to not listen to JW’s (“They have written their own Bible!”)
And Trinitarians are often very angry to see texts like John 1:1 rendered differently to what they are used to.
The New World Translation aims for a literal rendering of the original-language. I read an excellent book on this. “Truth in translation”, I have included a write up about it below. (I have bolded some bits relevant to our discussion)
  • Some linguists have examined modern Bible translations—including the NWT—for examples of inaccuracy and bias. One such scholar is Jason David BeDuhn, associate professor of religious studies at Northern Arizona University in the United States. In 2003 he published a 200-page study of nine of “the Bibles most widely in use in the English-speaking world.” His study examined several passages of Scripture that are controversial, for that is where “bias is most likely to interfere with translation.” For each passage, he compared the Greek text with the renderings of each English translation, and he looked for biased attempts to change the meaning. What is his assessment?
BeDuhn points out that the general public and many Bible scholars assume that the differences in the New World Translation (NW)*are due to religious bias on the part of its translators. However, he states: “Most of the differences are due to the greater accuracy of the NW as a literal, conservative translation.” While BeDuhn disagrees with certain renderings of the New World Translation, he says that** this version “emerges as the most accurate of the translations compared.” He calls it a “remarkably good” translation.
Dr.Benjamin Kedar, a Hebrew scholar in Israel, made a similar comment concerning the New World Translation. In 1989 he said: “This work reflects an honest endeavor to achieve an understanding of the text that is as accurate as possible. ...
I have never discovered in the New World Translation any biased intent to read something into the text that it does not contain.
    *”
Me again. So be careful of dismissing something for the wrong reason. We both know people will go to great lengths to find fault with the JW’s. I have seen lists where people have raked through 100 years of Watchtower articles searching for inaccuracies, adjustments and updates. Then listing them to discredit what we teach today. - What is with that?
Keep the translation and use it as a comparison in your Bible studies. If you find any differences, do some research and see what the apostles actually wrote in the original language. Don’t just assume we must have wickedly changed God’s word to back up our beliefs.

All the best in your studies. 👍

In case and point, yes that is all I can really find a point to keep it… Apologetic s, comparison. It’s been proven over and over, the NWT is not accurate enough to use for an actual reliable translation. Granted no translations are perfect.

In contrast I think I can use the NWT online if I need any reference in making a contrasting point of view between translations.

Unforgettably, the NWT is not a reliable translation for Christians.

I would burn it! But I’m a pyromaniac and enjoy any excuse for flame. 🙂

I remember encountering the NWT once. I didn’t know what it was but every time I touched it my head would ACHE. It was bizarre. I spent many minutes touching and withdrawing touch (to test and see if the aching would return every time I touched - and yes without fail it would immediately ache the moment my flesh touched the bindings and the pain would recede the moment I removed my hand). HAHAHA. I’m a masochist? No, it was just kind of… strangely cool. Anyway, it was probably just a dusty room but 🤷 BRING ON THE FLAME!

I was thinking if I did burn it (which I kinda want to) I’ll have to upload it to youtube. I know bad of me… but might as well if I do…right?

Oh well, the professor and scholar I mentioned disagree.

Your choice of course.

All the best in your studies. 😉

Help! That is bizarre.

Which do you think:
1- God doesn’t want you to touch it, (and causes you pain)
2 - Demons don’t want you to touch it
3 - some natural phenomena

I know people who start studying the Bible with JW’s and have had demon problems in the past often get harrassed. I’m in NZ, and the local Maori population are deeply into spiritisim and stuff. They often get demonic attempts to prevent them learning the Bible.

😃 I don’t know if I’d upload it to youtube actually. It’s one thing to believe the book is not credible and to burn it for your own enjoyment. It’s another thing to record that and publish it online… because as much as we may disagree with the NWT translation offending the members of the JW church is not terribly charitable and such a video could be seen as deliberately trying to offend. Even if we do not believe in their teachings that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be respectful.

BUT you could record it and send me a copy via email. 😉 Heheheh.

Or perhaps my spirit recoiling in response to incorrect doctrine that could lead me astray? Or maybe my Guardian angel pushing me away? Who knows!!! 🤷 I never gave it too much thought, I just thought it was a cool phenomenon. 🙂

Believe me the ones that do disagree, are few compared to the ones that would agree.

Thanks!

Gotcha, I understand. If I do… Ill let you know.

Thanks for the help!

I think the reason so many are fiercely anti the NWT isn’t so much from a translation accuracy point of view, but because they are fiercely against what the JW’s teach and are angry that they are able to do so on a world wide scale.

Time and again we see recommendations “Don’t engage the witnesses in a Bible discussion!”
A favourite excuse is: “They have changed the Bible to suit themselves! They have written their own one!”
But of course, we will teach you what the Bible says from whatever translation you prefer.
John 14:28 says: “The Father is greater than I am” in every translation I have ever read. (sorry trinity)
Ezekiel 18:4 says: “The soul that sins will die” in every translation (Sorry immortal soul and hellfire)
I could go on indefinitely…

Also remember, the NWT wasn’t complete until 1961.
The Jehovah’s Witnesses took their name in 1935. The Watchtower had been published since 1879. So in 1961 The JW’s were already approaching 1 million active members spread through most of the world. They had been happily showing people the truth from whatever Bible was available for decades before the NWT existed. Any many languages we teach the NWT still isn’t available.
The excuse “you’ve written your own Bible” is just an excuse.

Opponents will go to huge lengths to try to dis-credit us. We all know you can find all sorts of anti-witness stuff on the internet. People rake through 100 years of WT articles looking for faults and changes. What is with that?

They are desperate to discredit us. They don’t often resort to charges of sedition or mob violence like the clergy did in American in WW1 and later, they can’t, and are losing their power fast, so they have to try other means now.

There is superb logic in what a law teacher said once, which God has seen fit to include in the Holy scriptures. In Acts 5:33-39, the apostles were accosted by the religious leaders for teaching about Jesus. Gamaliel reasoned: “If their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourself fighting against God.”

Haha. Have fun. 👍
