Can anyone give me the history of this bible version? or even the background of their translators? I know this version is very biased with “the word was a god” among other things and is very criticized by bible scholars… How come this has passed as an official bible version if it has many loopholes with its translations? If this isn’t a valid translation, shouldn’t it be allowed to be published at all?

This is the Jehovah’s Witness’s bible.

The most obvious differences are the ones that refute the Trinity–like you mentioned above.

Like you said, the change was the difference of saying that “the word was God” to “the word was a god.” The JWs made this passage, and many others, conform to their theology by refuting the Holy Trinity. The JWs team of bible translators lead scholar on biblical Greek had a only a bachelor’s degree in classical Greek.

I was not aware that the new world translation was passed as an official bible version. This version is published by the Jehovah Witnesses own publishing house.

Are you talking to Jehovah’s Witnesses? A few good questions to ask would be:

Ask them to read John 17:3 in their new world translation. This passage discusses how there is only One-True God. Then ask them to read John 1 and ask if Jesus is the “god” mentioned in the passage. They will reply yes. Then ask if there is only “One-True God” and Jesus is only a god–is Jesus a false god? We know the answer to be of course “NO!” but this will show some of the fallacies in the JW theology.

When talking to JWs, use caution! These people know certain scriptures really well and use them in a gross attempt to make a theological pretzel out of our beliefs. Be very well prepared and studied.

1. define “official” - once you get outside the Church (by which I mean the Catholic Church) there isn’t anyone to “define” anything … . . only the JW’s consider this a legitimate translation.

If this isn’t a valid translation, shouldn’t it be allowed to be published at all?

JW theology is pretty poorly designed. Their bible is a phoney greek translation by a few people who have never studied Greek.

The religion (which is false BTW) is dying a slow death…at least in my neck of the woods. The nearby kingdom hall has been closed down for a few years. The remaining handfull of followers in my town left quite awhile ago. The remaining few left the society for mainline protestantism. (a few became Assemblies of God people in which that local church recently closed as well)

THe watchtowers door to door “pioneering” is failing them at a miserable rate as society moves further away from God in General.
Some towns in my area ban door to door evangelization. But the law isn’t needed anymore We used to get WT people every spring at our house. It has been years since I have seen them in my town. THe mormans seem to have dried up aroun here as well.

My theory is that as people either become more educated and/or there is now so much easily obtainable apologetics material (like here on the web), these groups are not able to pull the wool over the eyes of the unsuspecting as easily as they used to. As a result, they are only able to target the most illiterate and ignorant of people. It is highly indicative, I think, that while these groups have stagnated or shrunk here in the US, they still do a booming business in the poorest areas of the Third World.

Question though, have they (the JW bible council) ever got a hold of the original hebrew-aramaic scripture from the original apostles to come up with their translation? or derived it from another translation of the bible (as i’ve learned, from the KJV)?
