Separating anatomy from what it means to be a man or a woman, New York City is moving forward with a plan to let people alter the sex on their birth certificate even if they have not had sex-change surgery.

Under the rule being considered by the city’s Board of Health, which is likely to be adopted soon, people born in the city would be able to change the documented sex on their birth certificates by providing affidavits from a doctor and a mental health professional laying out why their patients should be considered members of the opposite sex, and asserting that their proposed change would be permanent.

Applicants would have to have changed their name and shown that they had lived in their adopted gender for at least two years, but there would be no explicit medical requirements.

That is confusing
If they need affidavits from medical professionals obviously there has to be a medical requirement.

Perhaps they just didn’t want to come up with an explicit list and let it be handled on a case-by-case basis.

While this could be helpful to people with certain medical conditions I can see it potentially being abused.

So I could just declare myself female today, and then attend an all-girls school in two years? Why the wait? Would I have to wait another two years to change back? It’s a personal choice, after all.

Wonder why California wasn’t first with this idea?

I just read this in the NYtimes.com. Is this for real?
I always wanted to be a duck. Can I have a doctor make an affidavit so I could be a duck?😃

Wow. Think what that would do to the geneaological researchers for the LDS.

Hey, I want to be 6’6" and 220 ibs. (I can keep my green eyes and brown hair. ) Can I have that on my drivers license? Maybe with a picture of Cary Grant instead of my ugly mug as well.

If would greatly improve my personal self image.

Well no, you would need a doctor’s note.

I imagine the genesis of the law was to deal with people born with ambiguous genitals or some genetic problem who may not fit into the definition given to them after a quick glance at birth.

Like I said there are probably a legitimate need for something like this for a small number of people BUT there is a potential for abuse. The media focus on it seems to boarder on the prurient.

when i first read that i thought it was something from theonion.com

now that it’s real… i’m thinking i want to change my gender on my license from male to female so i can get ladies night drink specials at the local pub…
will this help circumvent gay marriage laws? now one ‘partner’ can legally declare themselves ‘female’ and then legally the marriage is between a man and a woman!

wow, people have really just completely lost their minds.
