I am helping a new Catholic young adult group in my area get off the ground, and I invite any suggestions or advise. Right now, I’m looking for a good starting/ending prayer for our meetings. The group has been consecrated to Mary by our priest. I’ve got tons of good material to discuss from this very site, but its how to present it and lead the group that’s the greater challenge, I think.

Met my husband in a young adult group, we will be married 25 years in December. Our group usually met after Sunday evening Mass. Our meetings alternated between week one planning/business meeting for the next month’s activities; week two a spiritual discussion/speaker/activity; week three social justice activity discussion, speaker, activity; week four social activity open invite to young adults in the parish. We usually had a volunteer activity in the parish, Saturday night out, and physical activity during the month (volleyball). The group also had occasional fund raisers (for certain projects) and both assisted and participated in parish activities. Good luck.

You should try to find SFC... ie Singles For Christ the papal approved ministry in 175 countries. I feel like the social ministries for the Catholic church are all a secret.
In the LDS church you go to a specific ward based on age and marital status.

Good luck to you.

I think my sister met her husband (its been years) at a Theology on Tap session.

You can choose a new prayer every week and maybe add an “Our Father” so that everybody can pray. It’s hard to give advice on how to lead a group because they are all very different. In my hometown in Switzerland the director of the seminary comes and gives us a theology lesson on a subject we chose. We have 1 hour of teaching, then a break with some food, 1 more hour and finally we go in the church where we have adoration as well as the possibility to go to confession. It’s quite long but it’s only once a month. Apart from that we are also active in the parish, which is very important. We have a choir and some of us read at mass. We also often meet outside the official meetings to have lunch together, to do sport, to study etc.

In Boston I also go to different young adult or student groups. They are all very different. My advice would be to keep some time for socializing and to be flexible: often very different people come to the meetings and they all have different expectations.

Veni Creator Come, Holy Spirit

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Thy faithful and enkindle in them the fire of Thy love.

V. Send forth Thy Spirit and they shall be created.
R. And Thou shalt renew the face of the earth.

Let us pray. O God, Who didst instruct the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit, grant us in the same Spirit to be truly wise, and ever to rejoice in His consolation. Through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

The Angelus

The Angel of the Lord declared to Mary:
And she conceived of the Holy Spirit.
Code:
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of
our death. Amen.
Behold the handmaid of the Lord: Be it done unto me according to Thy word.
Code:
Hail Mary . . .
And the Word was made Flesh: And dwelt among us.
Code:
Hail Mary . . .
Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray:
Code:
Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts; that we, to whom the incarnation of Christ, Thy Son, was made known by the message of an angel, may by His Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of His Resurrection, through the same Christ Our Lord.
Amen.

Sub Tuum Praesiduum Under Thy Patronage

We fly to thy patronage,
O holy Mother of God;
despise not our petitions in our necessities,
but deliver us always from all dangers,
O glorious and blessed Virgin.
Amen.

Save Regina
We fly to thy patronage,
O holy Mother of God;
despise not our petitions in our necessities,

Amen.
Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae;
vita, dulcedo et spes nostra, salve.
Ad te clamamus exsules filii Hevae.
Ad te suspiramus gementes et flentes
in hac lacrimarum valle.
Eia ergo, advocata nostra,
illos tuos misericordes oculos ad nos converte.
Et Iesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,
nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.
O clemens, o pia, o dulcis Virgo Maria.

V. Ora pro nobis, sancta Dei Genitrix.
R. Ut digni efficamur promissionibus Christi.

Oremus. Amen.

As a young adult, I can offer some suggestions.

-Have lots of meetings. Not just once a month, but maybe 3x per month. Visibility and a social outlet are best for building a new group.

-Foster a variety of activities. Talks and speeches can be good, but so many parish groups do these all the time. Include volunteering opportunities, and day trips for hiking, biking or visiting other interesting local attractions.

-For prayer, you can use a well-published prayer, or create one on your own. It can be something simple, reverent and easy to remember so people can remember it easily and quickly. That way, you don’t have to keep making print-outs all the time as well.

I also like the “Suscipe” of St. Ignatius as a good prayer for young adults.
