New Zealand Catholic Church Question: please help if you know

Hello my CAF Family & Friends. Please put this question where it needs to be as I’m unsure. My Question is one that everyone will probably know. I feel silly asking questions on here sometimes I just don’t want to ask but this just something I want to know. Does the Country of New Zealand have.Cardinals? If you our anyone knows,.please let me know, I’ve search the internet and couldn’t get a direct answer. I would deeply be appreciative for your time. God bless you

Yes, this is correct. Cardinal Williams is retired, and before him (some time back) we had a Cardinal Delargey.

Actually, Cardinal Williams, when he was just Father Williams of the Catholic Enquiry Centre, was very instrumental in helping me into the Church way back in 1967!

Maybe why we don’t currently have a “non-retired” Cardinal is because New Zealand is a small country of 4+ million people, and a pretty secular country, with not a huge Catholic population. Immigrants from the Pacific Islands (Samoans and Tongans, mainly); Indians, and also many from the Philippines, are the life-blood of our Church here, IMHO.

My own parish is about 50% Filippino currently. NZ-born Catholics who are practising really are a dedicated lot, too, because there is no pressure from society to attend church… on the contrary!!

Sorry for the ramble. I am a wordy type!:o

At the last Census in 2006 there were slightly more Anglicans than Catholics, although about half the difference than in 2001. It will be interesting when the data from this year’s census comes out to see if that gap has closed. The reason for the increase is, in a word, immigration.

As for the Cardinal question - Cardinal Tom Williams was eligible to vote in a conclave until he turned 80 in 2010 and it’s standard practice to only have one voting Cardinal in a diocese at any time. While there have been three Consistories for the creation of Cardinals since then, there were several other, larger dioceses (such as New York) in the “queue” which would obviously be given priority.
