I like “Here I am Lord” a lot, also “The Spirit Sends us Forth to Serve”, all the Christmas hymns, and many others. I love to sing!
That’s one of my favorites too…Gift of Finest Wheat
That’s a very hard song to sing. I love the words and the melody, but I don’t like the way we sing it at Mass. We sing it very fast, it seems to me, and slowing it down would give the meaning of the words a chance to come out.I like Eagle’s Wings, but then that scripture was always one of my favorites.
His Eye is on the Sparrow is a wonderful old traditional gospel song. I heard Lynda Randall (a gospel singer) sing it just as I was leaving to go to the hospital for some not too pleasant tests. It really did help to keep repeating those words, and the picture of the Sacred Heart on the wall was good too.At my wedding I had:
Lord of All Hopefulness
Immaculate Mary
All Glory Laud and Honor
A professional singer did:
Ave Maria
My Eye is on the Sparrow (my wife’s choice- it was still good just a bit different for me)
Ah! your wedding- the one time you get to control the music. . . sigh. . .
That’s lovely. We sang it at Easter the past few years. I understand there are verses used at weddings too, but I haven’t heard those. One of my favorites that we just started singing last year is
“How Beautiful”
ocp.org/songs/30947
It always brings tears to my eyes.
You mean, “Shepherd me, O God, beyond my wants, beyond my fears …”I also like that responsorial psalm that goes “Blessed be oh God- Beyond our wants, beyond our fears- from death into life.”
I know what you mean. I slow it down and I’ve transposed it down. I am a big believer in singablity. That’s a very hard song to sing. I am not a Broadway show tune.We sing one on the Epiphany called Have You Seen Three Kings, but we didn’t sing it this year. I like it, but it does sound a little like a Broadway show tune, but more Paint Your Wagon than Music Man.
If you mean the Taize song, “Eat This Bread,” I have heard this same song sung in New Zealand with the words of the refrain altered thusly:Eat This Bread, Drink This Cup
Actually, the tune for ‘Immaculate Mary’ is from the 19th century. It’s a tune from the Pyrrenees [sp?] section of France. So it might have been a tune that St. Bernadette heard. His Eye is on the Sparrow is a wonderful old traditional gospel song. On the other hand, I have never cared for the melody of Immaculate Mary. We sang it in grade school, a million years ago: im MACK ulate MAR y our HEARTS are on fire. I see a row of 3rd graders keeping time with their heads, pony tails flying through the holes in their little red beanies.
That is my 10-year old little brother’s favorite hymn!Actually, the tune for ‘Immaculate Mary’ is from the 19th century. It’s a tune from the Pyrrenees [sp?] section of France. So it might have been a tune that St. Bernadette heard.
Since I go to the TLM now, I don’t hear too many ‘modern’ hymns. But I remember once that a priest I was friends with did a solo of ‘You Are Mine’-not at Mass, but in the setting of a prayer group. I wasn’t there to hear it myself, but he had a wonderful tenor voice, and those who heard it were very moved.
Now I want to hear this one!On the other hand, I have never cared for the melody of Immaculate Mary. We sang it in grade school, a million years ago: im MACK ulate MAR y our HEARTS are on fire. I always knew the one with the line “You reign now in splendor…” Strangely, OCP is where I first saw “…in Heaven” used. Now I want to hear this one!
I only know the one that goes:
Immaculate Mary
Your praises we sing
You reign now in Heaven
With Jesus our King
Ave Ave Ave Maria
Ave Ave Maria

I’ve only ever known it with ‘in Heaven’ but then again for most of my life I’d only ever heard it in French.I always knew the one with the line “You reign now in splendor…” Strangely, OCP is where I first saw “…in Heaven” used.
