Oscar A. Solis has been welcomed warmly and respectfully by those who were invited to attend his Installation Mass at the Cathedral of the Madeleine (pardon if term is incorrect with installation) from Rev France Davis, a local Protestant pastor to two of the Brethren of my church among others.

I believe Bishop Solis will be asset to Catholics in Utah and the community in general, with regard to building goodwill and understanding within the State of Utah as a whole.

Thoughts of cradle Catholics particularly sought here.

I am not sure what you want thoughts on, other than to wish Bishop Solis good luck. It is now common to invite other faith leaders to the installation of a new Bishop. There is nothing unusual about that.

He has had an interesting life. Born in the Phillipines, ordained a priest there. Emigrated to New Jersey, served there and in Louisiana. Auxiliary Bishop of Los Angeles 2004-17. The tenth Bishop of Salt Lake City. There are 300,000 Catholics in Utah, ten percent of the total population, the majority are Hispanic.

Those who proceeded him each had their own course in leading Catholicism in Utah, where my church is the majority.

That type of leadership, with different events going on- war, etc.

Further — why must there a breakdown, if you will, of different nationalities in the Catholic church? Is everyone God’s child regardless of the man’s differing characteristics?

Yes, we are all God’s children and there isn’t a breakdown per se. Being aware of the diverse cultures within you’re flock (as a pastor / bishop) is, however, important so that you can appropriately minister to their specific cultural needs.

The Cathedral is dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene. It is very beautiful. Has a “warm” feel to it. I was there once for Mass / confession a couple years ago. Yes, it would be an ‘installation Mass’. In the past the term “enthronement” would have been favored. As His Excellency was already a bishop, he wouldn’t have been re-ordained / consecrated, but simply “installed” or “enthroned” as bishop in his new see (Salt Lake City).

There is certainly a connection between the large Hispanic population in Utah and the fact that the new bishop is Spanish speaking. The US Catholic Church was for many years an immigrant church, with many parishes organized along national lines. A St. Patrick’s parish for the Irish, a St. Wenceslaus parish for the Bohemians, etc… That did not prevent the Church from being Universal, i.e., Catholic, in terms of belief.

It is about diversity.

"I recognize that the church in Utah, indeed the United States, is diverse and immigrant church. We come from different places,” said Solis during his homily. “Working to build inclusive communities of faith in the rich multi-cultural setting like Utah is both a challenge and an opportunity.” fox13now.com/2017/03/07/utah-catholics-welcome-new-bishop-solis-as-new-bishop-of-slc-diocese/

MAZAL TOV!
G-D Willing, he will be a force for Good, and for Goodwill among the Faithful of all Faiths in
Utah and the World.
Shabbat Shalom,
Joey
