Hi,

I as wondering if anyone knows anything about the Newman Center, is it a great place for college students to be active in their faith? Was anyone here a Newman? My mom keeps telling me how great of an organization it is, but I want to know from other people if it is truly a great place to be active in faith. If it helps, I’m a student at the University of New Orleans.

Thanks!

Asking about “a Newman Center” is something like asking about “a parish.” In general, yes, parishes are good things and Newman Centers are good things. But a specific parish or Newman Center may be better or worse than the average.

In a general sense Newman Centers have a couple of benefits. One is that they are geared toward college students, so activities usually follow the school calendar (e.g., some big event won’t be scheduled during finals). The other is that they’re a great way to meet people you have something in common with – you’re all Catholic students at the same university. Depending on where you go to school, it may be otherwise difficult to meet people who share your beliefs or to feel like you fit in with a more secular culture in the university.

I’m a sophomore and I’m very involved at my college’s Newman Center! It’s awesome!! 😃

Aren’t Newman Centers set up by Opus Dei and a place where they do a lot of their recruiting?

Not usually. The one at my son’s college is staffed by Capuchins and the one at our state flagship school is staffed by the Paulists. When I was in college we had a Jesuit and a Domincan (not sure which was “in charge”) 🙂 I have never known one to be an Opus Dei center - not that it couldn’t happen.

Newman Centers can be both good and bad. Unfortunately, there are some who have made campus ministries a place for liberal, unorthodox Catholicism.

You might also see if there is a group called FOCUS:
Fellowship of Catholic University Students. I believe it has a reputation as perhaps more…orthodox, shall we say?

It was the priest at the Temple Newman Center that brought me to the faith. I suggest that you attend to see how it fits your needs…especially orthodoxy!
