Can any of you recommend an edition of Apologia Pro Vita Sua by Cardinal Newman? I plan to give it as a gift to high church protestant friend graduating from seminary. I was eyeing this edition:

books.google.com/books/yup?id=mOOVDRj1SIsC&printsec=frontcover&source=gbs_v2_summary_r&cad=0#v=onepage&q&f=false

by Frank M Turner at Yale. I liked it because it includes some interesting looking sermons and a lengthy introduction describing the context of the times. However, Frank Turner appears to be Anglican, so I am a bit concerned of what he might say.

Has anyone read this edition?

Do you recommend any other editions?

thanks,

I think this may be a biased edition. search for it again on google an look for a review of it. I found one that said the annotator is biased

I can’t imagine a more wonderful gift! You should have no qualms whatever about the edition (assuming it is an accurate one) The notes may actually assist your Protestant friend. The editor may have an Anglican viewpoint, which may actually mitigate the aspect of handing a Catholic work, by a Catholic regarding his conversion from Anglicanism to an Anglican from seeming “heavy handed.” 😉

Many Anglicans hold John Henry Newman in the highest esteem. 🙂 Good luck!

Apoligia Pro Sua Vita

“Notre Dame Press annotated by some man with a Slavic name.” I was given this recommendation for an annotated edition of Apoligia Pro Sua Vita by email and I do not know the priest and don’t want to bother him again.

Do you know what edition he is referring to?
