The sort of person others consider of no account, he lived under a tarp at Funston and Clement Streets in San Francisco. But he endeared himself to many by his cheerful kindness and generosity. He spent part of each day praying in the back pews of the church. The parish priest said he had "overcome his homelessness, and he claimed the homeless man’s body and gave him a funeral. Church families, neighbors, shopkeepers, and perhaps even strangers, came. Some people afterwards in the church spoke of his kind and generous soul.
