That’s something to be happy about! Praise God! He is the source of our strength, after all!

I guess if you go to their website to hear it they have cut it to prioritize the race factor over giving glory to God.
Where are you getting that from? The original article that the linked article quotes is from a diocesan newspaper, not NBC.

I also don’t get the comment about race. 🤷

NBC shows the Olympics and had a clip of the interview on their website. They left out the part giving glory to God.

Are you saying there is a video from The Standard interview? Where is it? Who cares if NBC didn’t air the whole thing if there is video available elsewhere?

I just heard audio.
Okay then, where is the audio?

I don’t think the interview with The Standard was anything NBC used. They don’t have to; they have rights to countless hours of their own material. If you can’t find the audio you heard before it’s probably buried under thousands of other clips or perhaps even taken off the site to make room for more. I looked but there is a lot of media on there and the most popular and recent is pushed to the front. I also can’t really see NBC using just audio when they have video. Are you sure it wasn’t from another website? Either her own or one for swimming?

I haven’t been watching much of the Olympics so far. I heard the audio on the radio. I don’t understand why in 2016 we still have to talk about race at the Olympics.

I’ve watched some of the Rio games: gymnastics, swimming, track and field, volleyball, plus quite a few medal ceremonies. The only time I’ve heard race mentioned was after Simone Manuel won her first gold. I’m glad they talked about it. Especially after an Italian gymnast and official made some racist comments. The gymnastics official said,
Why are there no black swimmers? Because their physical features don’t suit the sport.’ Ciaralli also said that black people ‘may not have some of the necessities to be, let’s say, a field manager or a general manager’ and that they aren’t good swimmers because they ‘don’t have the buoyancy’.
If there is more diversity because different groups are facing fewer barriers I’m all for celebrating that. If clueless people say racist things I think the best counter measures are not letting them and, those who agree with them, think that their position is okay, combined with visibility for people who identify with that group.

I shocked to hear that someone would be so bold and repeat that old, racist belief that black people don’t float. I missed Simone’s race but saw the results and thought of that racist jerk and smiled. He’s not the only one who thinks that and Simone is a role model for other little girls with black skin so they can see the possibilities.

all of the athletes are role models.

Yes, but it’s exciting when it’s a first and extra inspiring when you see someone like you winning. A Swiss gymnast took home the first medal ever for her country. I was proud and I know young Swiss gymnasts will know they could be on the podium someday; it gives them not only a goal but hope. I also saw a 41 year old gymnast competing in a sport in which athletes often peak before they can compete internationally; this was a surprise. She didn’t medal but it was cool for someone my age to see her still competing. If you can’t appreciate any of that, oh well. 🤷

I am tired of all the hoopla about the Olympics. I loved them when I was growing up. They cost so much money to put on and there is so much poverty in Rio and throughout Brazil. They just don’t mean as much to me now. Ratings are down this year for NBC. These athletes have so many competitions they participate in.

And I’m enjoying the Games for the first time in years. The athletes I’ve watched appear to be having fun and I enjoy seeing the comraderie between teammates but competitors as well. I did not see US athletes hug Russian or Chinese athletes way back when.
