I have to admit that I cringe sometimes when the Pope speaks in these “interviews”. In this case, I like what he said. He admitted that he would give the benefit of the doubt, and I have a hunch he was not fed the entirety of Trump’s views by the person asking him. He also said that it was putting up the wall WITHOUT building bridges that would be unChristian, and he’s spot on. The Christian Gospel builds up the Body of Christ, and teaches us reliance on being a part of the Body. A person who would build up a wall and have no bridges (work to completely isolate themselves from others) would indeed be acting contrary to the Christian Gospel. We are One Body in Christ…not I. The moment I work to cut myself off from others (or cut them off from myself), I cease to work toward unity and effectively divide myself from the Body, and I have no basis upon which to call myself “Christian”.

Certainly, I understand the Pope’s statement was in relation to immigration. Yes, Mr Trump’s actions and words are not very Christain in these matters.

Mr. Trump’s prior four bankruptcy filings and his boasting of “beating the system” are unchristian. Is this not considered steeling? The Holy Catholic Church, up until the time of Pope Leo XIII CONDEMNED ‘lending with interest’. Yet today the entire banking world lends with interest. The reason lending with interest is condemned is because charging interest is a Mortal Sin and affirmed by many saints, theologians, (st. Thomas Aquinas) etc.,

Taxation by a controlling government that seeks to impose its will on the people (e.g. see Little Sisters of the Poor vs. US Government) is also evil which is why the apostles and Christians opposed it by putting all their money in common (acts. 2:44)

True Holy matrimony is a sacrifice offered and vowed on the Altar of God at Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. It is unfortunate that the Catholic community at large is not teaching on this holy sacrament clearly. We must actually teach others about this Holy Sacrament as being united to Jesus Christ sacrifice and His sacred vow/Covenant i.e. Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

Finally, you will not be leaving your doors unlocked at your home. Nor will Bishops or Priests leave churches unlocked for the homeless and illegals to occupy at will

Notice how this changed and how the majority of modern day christians have been convinced to believe there is nothing wrong with this at all…I dont think this is coincidence, it just shows when something is good and ‘normal’ for the secular world, its practice is made to look harmless, even beneficial to society (now who that does that sound like?)
 
where did the pope get the idea that trump is “only” about building walls. this is clearly a lie and the pope was told this about trump by someone. that someone is completely lying about trump.

trump is mostly about building bridges.

i do not blame the pope. and indeed, the pope was careful to say he was only commenting about what someone else said about trump.

it is true that a person who is “only” about building walls is not following Christ.

The Pope responded, “Thank God he said I am a politician because Aristotle defined the human person as an ‘animal politicus’ [a political animal]. So at least I am a human person. As to whether I am a pawn, well, maybe, I don’t know. I’ll leave that up to your judgment and that of the people.”

He then went on to say, “And then, a person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian. This is not in the gospel. As far as what you said about whether I would advise to vote or not to vote, I am not going to get involved in that. I say only that this man is not Christian if he says things like that. We must see if he said things in that way and in this I give the benefit of the doubt.”

The official English language translation from the Vatican of that comment is as follows. “But the Pope said what we all know, when we follow his teaching and his position: that we should not build walls but bridges. He [the Pope] has always said this,

continuously, and he has said this about the issues of migration in Europe, many times. So it is not a specific issue, limited to this case. This is one of [the Pope’s] general attitudes, very consistent with what is a courageous following of the Gospel of welcome and solidarity. Of course, this was then raised, but it is not that the Pope wishes to be, in any way, a personal attack nor an indication of voting.”

Gee, as usual all that furor is over nothing… Big surprise there, right?

-Told racist mass murder fantasies about killing captured Muslims with bullets coated in pigs blood

For the GOP base, these things are features, not bugs. They are not things to overlook in favor of his good positions and actions. These are his good positions and actions. And the more horrible he shows himself to be, the more his numbers rise with that base.

That Frankenstein base is your creation. They are your fault. 100% entirely your fault. You made them, catechized them, and continue to feed them the lies that disposed them to fall down in adoration of this incredibly dangerous narcissist demagogue. And your utter refusal to take responsibility for that will destroy you if you don’t start repenting PDQ.
We are not punished for our sins. We are punished by our sins–by what we ourselves choose. Trump is the choice of the GOP. And if that choice is not repented it will deserve all the destructon he will bring you guys. I just pray he does not bring destruction on the rest of us or on the world. If the guy is ready to sue whenever his vanity is miffed, imagine what he can do with nuclear launch codes.
 
I have been joking about it but look and see - all the world powers are in the middle east - all we need is the great deal maker and the false prophet - which certainly would not be the pope as some think. The pope should just ignore him like Trump deserves to be ignored - you don’t pump the ego of a man like that.- should wash his hands of Donald Trump and not give him one second of his time.

You have identified yourself as a “Bible Christian” so who is the “we” you are speaking on behalf of when it regards the Holy Sacraments?

😊 Thanks but I see him as much the same as what Archbishop Fulton Sheen said about the Catholic faith. “The Catholic faith is like a lion in a cage. You don’t need to defend it - you simply need to open the cage door.”

I see Pope Francis much the same way.

To me, it’s more a case of going back and looking at what he actually said, not what the media or some individual in the news says that he said.

As with much of our most holy faith, it’s not as much defending what we believe as it is explaining to people that what they object to is not something that the church teaches.

Again Bishop Sheen wisely told us,

“There are not over a hundred people in the United States who hate the Catholic Church.

There are millions, however, who hate what they wrongly believe to be the Catholic Church—which is, of course, quite a different thing. …

As a matter of fact, if we Catholics believed all of the untruths and lies which were said against the Church, we probably would hate the Church a thousand times more than they do."
 
Even in English the context would have revealed what the Holy Father was saying, though I am sure it is clearer for those used to thinking in Italian or Latin, as the article mentions.

it is obvious someone lied to the Holy Father about donald trump.

there is no support or evidence for saying trump is ONLY about building walls. whoever told the Holy Father that is guilty of calumny and slander.

trump’s whole life has been about building things, making things work, making things better. have trump’s tactics always been Christ like? of course not, whose tactics have always been Christ like?

these vicious attacks on trump, expressed here by people who only know trump through what they have heard and read, are nothing more gossip, innuendo and lies.
