Long story short my wife got pressued into having filshie clips put in after a really difficuly pregnancy, and the things have been nightmares for her health (horribly painful periods, wacky hormonal issues, ovarian cysts etc.), needless to say we’ve learned our lesson and I am going to have to pay about $5,500 to have them out(its “elective” sigh). Afterwards we will never use artifical methods again.

The problem is even before this my wife has always had highly irregular periods, is that something you can work with in NFP or does it precluse using it effectively?

It can work fine with irregular periods.

Realize, that, it may take awhile for her to learn the signals of her cycle, charting, etc. Thus, if you are not able to have a child at this time, there may be quite a bit of abstinence for awhile as her body heals and you and she learn to tell the different parts of each cycle.

Both of you take an NFP course (if your church doesn’t offer one, they should be able to direct you to a local parish which does). If multiple methods are offered, try them all.

If you have a local Gyno who is an NFP doc, he would be most helpful as a resource as well.

Heh, we dont want more kids, hence the NFP. We have been blessed enough on that front, one more and we’d outgrow the house, and its a big one!

Her last pregnancy was a nightmare, so the doctors really pushed the ligation and unfortunately we as a couple bought the pitch.

Live and learn.

Modern methods of NFP, are by definition designed for irregular periods. If you needed regularity for them, all you would need is a calendar to count days.

Since she has health issues, I recommend Creighton method as the docs who are trained in napro technology can use the info from the charts to help heal.
