Are you saying couples were not necessarily obliged to ‘intend conception’ when paying the ‘marital debt’?No. There was something called “marital debt”. You were supposed to give yourself to your spouse if he can’t control his drive- but this was seen as “helping in the weakness”, not “enjoying unitive marriage bond”
I think the Fathers, being human, knew what triggered lustful thoughts. *Song of Songs *is certainly capable of triggering such thoughts, and it’s fine to read it with caution, even today. Advising caution however, is not equal to condemnation. I still haven’t seen this narrative (or the sexual passion it contains) explicitly condemned. You and I think that. However, Church in the past was more strict.
Thank you very much for the link. I’m going to follow your discussion with MarcoPolo on this one.
You mean in the ‘cycle’, right? I was just trying to point out that all infertility has the same practial effect on any given act of intercourse. I think we agree there are different causes of infertility which, in turn, affect its duration. Remember though, even ‘infertile’ couples conceive occasionally. But infertility in the circle is not infertility. It is like saying food is rotten if it is not being eaten.
