A friend of mine underwent a hysterectomy.

Lately she asked if she would have to live NFP so as to minimize any possibility of conceptions that would of course never implant, and thus die. Any ideas on what I should advise her?

Thanks!

Marty

There can be no conception as there is no uterus and often no ovaries. I’m surprised your friend didn’t know this about a hysterectomy–her doctor should have explained better. All the female reproductive organs are removed. Sometimes the ovaries are left, but there is no path from the vagina to the ovaries, so no conception can take place. There is also no sin in a hysterecomy done due to medical issues. No need for NFP, either.

God bless,
Jennifer

Dear Jennifer,

Thank you for your fast reply. I since looked up a couple of medical websites that portray the operation, and it looks pretty clear that even in those cases that the ovaries and fallopian tubes are left in place, there is no pathway to the cervix, -just scar tissue.

The doctor did not explain much apparently.

if you are not her priest you should advise her to discuss it with her priest.
sounds like she also needs to discuss with her doctor exactly what procedure was done, its implications, results, side effects and future health concerns that may arise.

Conception and/or pregnancy after hysterectomy is an extremely rare occurrence but it has happened. I’d check with a priest. However, I don’t think a woman is required to do anything because it is so rare.
