Does anyone know about practicing NFP while taking Hormone Therapy drugs following a mastectomy?? I am having my surgery on Good Friday at a catholic hospital but have not been able to get any answers regarding this subject. My husband and I have been practicing NFP for 10 years. I was told today that I was the first person to ask about this?? The side effects of the drug is known to harm a baby and I will most likely be on this medication for 5 years. I am not sure where to turn. Thank you for your comments in advance.

God bless you with your surgery.

I took tamoxifen for several years for a different problem and found that I was able to continue with NFP. I also found that my ovulations and periods became further apart, but the fertility signs remained reliable. Of great help was the NFP-only physician I found - had to drive 3 hours to see him, but so worth it. I believe you can find a list of good doctors at One More Soul.

I’m sure you know that no circumstance, no matter how dire, makes it acceptable to use artificial birth control.

With prayer and some good guidance, you can make the NFP work with the drug.

Are you saying you think it is acceptable to risk severe damage to an unborn child conceived while taking a necessary but harmful drug but it is not acceptable to use contraception to prevent possible harm?

I would seriously question that. I think abstinence would be better. I think it would be immoral to risk harm to a child if the NFP failed.

No, she’s saying that using artificial birth control is never acceptable. That’s all.

In cases where there’s risk of birth defects, etc, you abstain from relations as you suggested. Artificial birth control can fail too.

Dear Laurel,
I wish you all the best with your surgery and follow-up.
I really think you should not pay any attention to what anyone says on this thread. It is too much like getting medical advice which we are not supposed to do. Please consult a doctor or clinic trained in NFP. Your local diocesan group that teaches NFP might be a good contact if your doctor is unable to refer you to an expert.
Blessings to you and your family,
momor

Thank you so much for all of the prayers and support. I did look at the Pope Paul VI website and I am so blessed that there is a NFP doctor within about 60 miles. I am contacting her today.

For those concerned about my beliefs, I practice NFP as a Catholic and am aware of my moral responsibilities, as far as conceiving on this drug, it is not my intention and will do what I can to avoid that, but conception is God’s will and I have faith. Thank you all and God Bless you for your support.

Personally I would pray for divine healing and not take the drugs. I read that Tamoxifen was developed as a morning after pill but refused patent and then used for breast cancer treatment. It is really witch doctor medicine as doctors practice child sacrifice.

You have got to be out of your mind.
