NFP postpartum cycle

My wife and welcomed our fifth child to our family last December. What normally happens with my wifes cycle is that after she starts her period again, she is more or less regular again. It has now been 38 days since she started last and we are a little wigged out. I should add that we have only been together once since she started last and that was at the tail end of the bleeding. Her mucus observations have been typical of a breastfeeding mother who is weening.

I suppose there could have been a contact pregnancy, but I just don’t think anything has happened to make that possible. Has anyone else out there had a similar cycle?

And to answer it before it is asked: We don’t want to take a pregnancy test because we are in full denial. I really really don’t think she is pregnant; I am just looking for a word of encouragement…

Well, it should be simple enough to figure out if you chart.

How many days since she ovulated?

If you chart temps, and she has had 18+ days of a sustained temp rise, then you are probably pregnant.

If you don’t chart temps, and you are P+16, you’ll need to take a pregnancy test to be sure.

Was her pre-ovulatory phase longer than usual?
 
You really should take a test, for peace of mind.

What does her chart look like?
 
I recently found out I was pregnant with my fourth child. I became pregnant while ecologically breastfeeding and prior to starting my first period… I too am in complete denial even though I’ve taken five tests… It just doesn’t seem possible…

All that it takes is ONE time… so test to reassure yourself…

I use an NFP database. Here is the output.
The only intercourse day is 4/27. If there is nothing in the discharge, it means Dry All Day.

I’m not sure about CM… mine’s never been a reliable indicator of anything, all I know about is temp 😦

I still think you should test… if you’re not pregnant, you’ll still end up worrying about it until you do.
 
I would guess that if ovulation occurred, it occurred somewhere around May 23rd. Breastfeeding cycles can be really really wacky.

I’d guess you were not pregnant from that data. You might want to considering adding in temping (it seems like you do Creighton) to just have a confirmation that ovulation occurred for next cycle.

Do you have a Creighton teacher you can talk to? Navigating the return to fertility while breastfeeding can by tricky.

We don’t have a teacher at the moment. We moved here from Las Vegas where the dioceses has a staff teacher. Here in Sacramento, there is no diosocen (sp?) staff but they do have a list of practitioners. It has been on my list to do for a few weeks. I think I need to get moving…

I think I will add temping, just to be sure. What kind of thermometer do you use for that?
 
Has she had several regular cycles? With my first and second, I was pretty much perfectly regular from the first time my cycle came back (around 3.5 mo) until my next pregnancy. With my third baby, I had very long cycles, like the body would gear up for ovulation and then not ovulate. Maybe that is what happened this time? Is she breastfeeding? Have there been any changes in her breastfeeding ?
BTW, what is contact pregnancy?
 
I’m not an expert, but it looks like, to me, that she may have ovulated around May 23rd, like lizziebits said. If so, she’s only been in the luteal phase for a week! I wouldn’t expect her to start her next period for another week. Breastfeeding cycles are, I think, going to be wacky, and perhaps longer than normal. You could test if you wanted, but even if she is contact-pregnant(LisB, that means when sperm comes in contact with the outside of the woman’s parts and makes it’s way inside, rather than the usual way; hence ‘contact’ pregnancy), I don’t think a test would show it yet, it being only a week after ovulation. I’d say, don’t panic quite yet! 😛

Ok, I thought of that, but didn’t know if that is what he meant (I know it can happen by mistake, a couple that truly plans on completing intercourse and unintentionally doesn’t make it), and then thought maybe it was suggesting they are very fertile etc (you know how people joke that they get pregnant by looking at each other etc). Aaanyways, I think there is a chance it is just a wacky breastfeeding cycle, not all postpartums will be the same. If intercourse and attempt to intercourse happened early on, and not around fertile CM time, and ovulation is around the 23rd, then it is probably just that (wacky bf cycle).

I would suggest a thermometer specifically labeled for “basal body temperature”, like this one:
