The Church does teach that NFP may only be used for just reasons. However, if NFP were to be used for selfish reasons, would that objectively be a mortal or venial sin?

I have read conflicting answers. Some Catholics say it depends on the gravity of selfishness and can therefore be venial or mortal. I have read other opinions (even from apologists) who state that selfish NFP use is at most venial sin regardless of the couple’s selfish intentions.

Thanks in advance

Our use of nfp was mortal sin. But it would depend on circumstances. I dont think anyone can make that distinction for others. some think you cant sin using nfp, some think nfp is sinful. I’d say both positions are extreme. Nfp is a tool. How you use any tool determines if sin is involved.

It’s a venial sin.

Choosing to not have sex is not a grave matter, but a person can do so for the wrong reasons.

Kimberly Hahn thoroughly discusses topics related to NFP in “Life Giving Love” with backing from official Church teaching. It’s a good albeit somewhat long read.

NFP is not a sin. It’s approved by the Church. Even how it stands, NFP isn’t 100% foolproof, contraception can happen.

Selfish intentions hit home in part for me, my wife is 35 and she has PCOS and Endometriosis. We did some NPF but it appears for naught. Worry about reconciling this with God.
