NFP to try to choose a gender

We did it successfully. We had three girls and two boys so we decided to try for a boy to even things up. We lost the baby on our forst attempt, too early to know if it was a boy or girl, but on the second try it worked and we now have a beautiful 8 week old boy. We would have been happy with either gender, but thought it would be nice to have a symmetrical family 😃

I reckon it significantly increases your chances, but you can never be 100% certain of achieving one or the other.

Any luck with this?
Don’t really know. I have read that to try for a boy, a couple should time intimacy within hours of ovulation. To try for a girl, they should time intimacy a few days prior to ovulation. The reason, if I recall, is that Y-bearing sperm are faster and X-bearing sperm survive longer.

Funny, Bobby Jim 🙂

I haven’t heard about using NFP in this manner, but I have heard about certain diets and making your body alkaline or acidic and certain positions etc. that are supposed to influence the gender of your baby.

However, I have also read that, as Catholics, we are not supposed to engage in gender selection in any way.

If I were contemplating this issue, I would consult with my priest and local NFP office.

Where did you read that?

i don’t think it’s an exact science, i think it’s 50-50, you just can’t predict that kind of thing. but it is gender selection, and even if you tell yourself you would still be happy if you got the opposite gender than you originally wanted, i think the church says to completely forfeit control of your fertility and leave it 100% up to god. whether you get pregnant or don’t, and whether you have a boy or girl, god made it that way for a reason and you’re not supposed to try to take the control into your own hands. theoretically it doesn’t matter if a baby is a boy or a girl, as long as it’s healthy and will be well-cared for and loved. you don’t want your child to grow up suspecting that you wanted a (opposite gender baby) instead and were disappointed.

Taking Charge of Your Fertility has a chapter dedicated to it.

It seemed doable…but I wouldn’t bother…I’d be happy with either anyway! Both are blessings!

We have taking charge of your fertility. I guess I should dust it off. I am curious if people have tried this. But I am more curious if it is morally acceptable. I would love either and I am not even sure it significantly increases your chances.

It worked backwards for us. When we made love daily/ every other day, we got a girl, twice when we made love way before ovulation we got boys. I, personally, dont know anyone who used this method successfully. Best to be open to whatever God choses, HE, knows best 🙂

We haven’t tried it, but when I looked back on my charts both times they showed that the timing would have “made girls more likely” (if it were to actually help at all) and we have two girls.

So far with baby one it worked for us. We weren’t trying to pick gender, but according to the timing methods to get one gender over the other it was correct.

Looking back at our first two babies, we got what was most likely. So based on timing, we should have gotten a boy, then a girl, which is what we got. This time around, we were most likely to have conceived a girl, but the ultrasound is showing a boy. So it works sometimes, not always.

Where did you read this?
The church says that there are only 2 forms of (whatever you’d call it) acceptable: abstinence or NFP. There is a lot of debate between Catholics regarding whether or not these 2 “methods” are also forms of birth control.

If we’re not supposed to leave it up to God, then how would we control our fertility without offending God or using birth control? Keeping in mind that many people do feel that abstinence and NFP are also forms of birth control. I’d be confused too.
