**My husband and I have been using what I think to be a form of NFP. We attended the Engaged Encounter weekend before we were married and the couple there had talked about how now there were monitors that you could use to track your cycle. I looked into these monitors and they were way too expensive for us. I , instead bought a fertility monitor (people use these TO get pregnant) and use the information to see when I am fertile and when I’m not - thus helping me to space my children (I have a one year old now). Does this comply with the Church’s teaching? When I heard that there were monitors available, I assumed it was ok with the Church since it was said at a Catholic Engaged Encounter Weekend. I know you can’t assume that everything you hear is correct, but I just wanted to get some feedback. **

I think this is in line with Church teaching. The only thing you’re doing to avoid pregnancy is gaining information about your fertile time (just as in the NFP methods available). I’m curious as to how “successful” this would be for avoiding. But I’m sure you’ve considered that! 😃 Anyway, I don’t see any sin here.

Yes, a fertility monito is OK.

However, the companies that make them do not recommend them for avoiding.

There is one method of NFP that uses the monitor along with the woman observing her fertility signs. This is the Marquette Model of NFP.

The other models are Creighton Fertility Care, Billings Ovulation Model, and Sympto-Thermal Method through the Couple to Couple League.

I’d suggest that in addition to the monitor, you take a class on NFP. Check with your diocesan family life office for local classes and/or Google the NFP methods listed above and go to their websites to find teachers.

I’ve been using it for over a year now. I just find out any time that I could get pregnant (five days before I ovulate) and do not have intercourse at that time until two days after I’ve ovulated. Thanks for the response

I believe it’s the Marquette model that uses the monitors as part of it’s NFP technique…
There are several models out there… sympto-thermal, Creighton, Marquette, etc…
So if you’re looking for extra info… google those!

Here’s a link on the Marquette model if you need more info:

LadyComp is marketed and approved for avoiding and achieving.
