Okay so if you don’t want to read anything about mucus read no further and exit this thread 🙂

Okay so I am fairly new to the whole NFP thing, I’ve only been faithfully practicing it and following the rules for about six months but even before that I was in tune with my body signals and what not.

So here is the situation, I think I may have just entered my thermal shift without ever having any mucus!

I’ve NEVER had a cycle without mucus, even two months ago when I had bronchitis and was on antibiotics and decongesants. Furthermore, I normally have a mucus patch of around 5 days give or take a day so far.So this is just very puzzling to me.What may have caused this I wonder?

Next dilemma, my husband and I have been using the last dry day rule for a few cycles now since we are not actively trying to avoid and because I normally have such distinct fertile mucus it made sense to us to use that rule. So we had relations on cycle days 9 and 12 not really worrying because as stated I normally have clear mucus signs and I have had a cycle as long as 40days in the last year so we figure this may just be an off cycle.Well its cycle day 16 and it looks like I have two temps now in a clear rising pattern. So now I think I’m going to be paranoid about a possible pregnancy (which would be an awesome blessing !!!) but now I’ll worry about all the coffee I’ve had and how poorly I’ve eaten recently and the few cocktails I had at the Christmas party on sat 😦

So i don’t know whats going on this cycle but its weird. Has anyone else ever had a cycle without any mucus?

Hmmm… was CD 12 the day you had the cocktails? Sometimes drinking can affect your temperature… could be an outlier… ???

Were you taking any medications during this cycle? Or eating differently? Or sleeping in different conditions (heavy blankets affect my temperature)?

Either way… the cocktails and caffeine are not going to be an issue if you are pregnant - especially this early on. Don’t worry about that in the least.

How are you checking your mucous… externally or internally?
Are you checking your cervical position as well?

Those are my suggestions - checking mucous internally and checking cervical position. Yes, I have had some strange cycles where my mucous wasn’t obvious AT ALL externally, but my internal mucous and cervical checks always confirmed that I was indeed ovulating…

HTH a bit… 🙂

I’m no expert, but I’ve been using NFP for 2.5 years and have never watched the mucus. With my regular cycle, I use number of days w/thermal shift and cervix checks to determine fertile/non-fertile days.

When I was checking externally, I had “no mucus” (but really did, I suspect) and that is where my dd came from!

Are you checking at the cervical os? Because, from my experience, that is what I tell EVERYONE to do now!

I’m glad I wasn’t, because she is a wonderful little girl, my only daughter.🙂

When was your last period?

My immediate thought is to tell you to get a pregnancy test.

Here are other questions:

When was the date of your last menstruation? And what day of your cycle did this fall on?

Prior to that - on what days of your cycle did you have intercourse?

Here’s my thought. If you did bleed last month - did it seem like a full period? I am wondering if it was an implantation bleed.

AF started on the 25 of Nov. and lasted 6 days so I’m fairly sure it was a real period. although it wasn’t especially heavy but it wasn’t light either. On my chart that would be cycle days 1-6 because you start a new chart with your period right? if i look at the chart before this and added my period to that chart it would be cycle days 25-31. I guess my last chart was the shortest I’ve ever had being only 24 days if that was a real period. the other five charts were all at least 28 days.If it was implantation bleeding would it last that long?

So my other problem with figuring this all out is I can’t check my cervix. Its to high or my fingers are to short or something, my OB even has trouble with it sometimes 🙂

as to your question Emily cycle day 12 was the day with the cocktails. but cycle day 13 and 14 temps were still in the low level range. It wasn’t until cycle day 15 that it rose and then again today.

I have also checked internally for mucus a few times this cycle but not everyday, and there really wasn’t any the times I checked. So very confusing!

In the NFP book it recommends sitting on a toilet and pushing downward over your uterus/bladder to help reach a high cervix. You just have to be sure that you always use this technique so you can compare as your cycle progresses since the cervix moves from high to low. If you can find it, the cervix also firms up during infertile time similar to the firmness of the tip of the nose. Hope that helps, good luck and God bless 🙂

Yes, I have. But then again, I am old. Well, if not old, at least older. I wrote it off to the beginnings of the end. 😊

But I can always check my cervix position. And during those months, I go by that. 🤷

I’m a Creighton Model user, so I don’t temp and can’t help you with the thermal shift questions, but I just wanted to chime in about this.

My last cycle was totally dry, and up until then I’d been a super-fertile 22 year old who usually had 10+ days of fertile-type mucus per cycle.

I know I am not pregnant because I tested (multiple times) and had a pretty heavy period, but I did go quite awhile w/o seeing any clear, lubricative, stretchy mucus. It happens–sometimes due to stress, diet, life changes. Your fertility cycle is very sensitive to body changes and conditions, so this could have been caused by many things. I have had shorter cycles with sub-fertile mucus before as well, so you’re not totally weird for having a short, seemingly dry cycle.

That’s about as much as I can help with…lol. Good luck navigating w/ your DH. 👍

I’ve had this happen multiples of times. Is it a full thermal shft? My temp shift is only from 97.9 to 98.1 during ovulating cycles. Sounds like an anovulatory cycle to me. As others have said, always check cervix positioning. Even if I have no noticable change in CM, I can always detect cervix position. Most cycles without CM end up being a non ovulating cycle.

You are correct that the new cycle begins with the menstruation.

So, prior to day 24, on what days did you indicate fertility and what days did you have intercourse.

I had a friend that was convinced she had her period but had no mucus signs the following month. And she was pregnant. I don’t know if her bleed was heavy or light, but she thought it was her period.

And, yes, stress, exercise, eating habits, etc can affect a woman’s cycle.

Good question… a full thermal shift must be 0.4 degF and stay elevated for at least 4 days.

Yes… every cycle starts on the first day of your period.
And, although modern NFP does not “count days”, it is helpful to look back at the consistency of your cycles - what cycle days do you normally ovulate? When do you normally see a temperature shift? How long is your normal luteal phase? If you normally see ovulation signs anywhere from day 8-16, then I’d typically try to abstain during those days if it’s critical to avoid conception… and pay super attention to those fertility signs especially during that time period.

How was your temperature this morning?

cycle.
So prior to day 24 I had fertile mucus days 10-14.
We had intercourse on days4, 6, 8, and 18.
On cycle day 14 is when I began to rise.
My LTL for that cycle was 97.8
my temp on cycle day 14 was 98.2
it stayed at or above that temp for 4 more days before beginning to fall back toward the LTL with my “period” on cycle day 24.

It would appear to be a thermal shift, My temp today was also In the HTL. So that would be my 3 days in a rising pattern.

So here is a new question. Since I don’t have a peak day because there wasn’t any mucus this cycle do I just count the day in the LTL preceding the shift as peak day or what. Do you wait and extra day to confirm its a shift? very weird cycle:shrug:

My answer as an NFP teacher would be this:

If you have ruled out pregnancy, then treat the days as pre-ovulatory. If you have not ovulated, then you have not cycled. You may have a bleed, but until you can p(name removed by moderator)oint ovulation and signs of fertility, you need to treat the days as pre-ovulatory.

Feel free to PM me. I’m not sure if I explained this clearly.

My temp always drops two to three days before my period begins. Have you noticed a temp drop in your charts in previous months before your period begins?

yes its always dropped before my period. And I think I remember reading somewhere that if you are pregnant your temps would remain in the upper temp levels not drop back down.🤷
